German audiophile magazine STEREOPLAY (March 2004 issue) hails Harman Kardon's brand new receiver AVR 430 as the first unit to offer audiophile stereo and multichannel performance with CD and DVD Audio (MSRP: €1,000).Yamaha's new RX V 2400 receiver cannot quite match the Harman Kardon but offers a "front presence" speaker setup for three-dimensional reproduction of 2+2+2 material on DVD Audio (also perfect for many DVD Video soundtracks). MSRP: €1,050.
Also covered in this issue: A report from the 2004 CES in Las Vegas doubts whether hi-rez is a real success in the United States - considering that very few exhibitors would demo it. Philips and Sony's engagement with universal drives/decoders (SD 5.2) and Linn's Silver Engine is seen as a loophole for future DVD Audio support. Marantz DV 6400 is reviewed as excellent yet affordable unit for DVD Audio playback (wide frequency range not equalled by SA-CD) - MSRP: €600.

I think you are right about sacd, but.....as we speak, DVD Forum has choosen what format should be use in HD-DVD (audio). DD, dts and MLP.
Since Panasonic support Blu-ray, it might be funny to see how far sacd can go there? :D

With the exception of a few documentaries maybe... But I am afraid there will be no HD-DVD/Blu-Ray based music disc...

What makes you so sure? :)

The format that's get support from the movie industry will win.Everybody seems focussed on the hardware that gets out first.
But in this case the software will matter and the backward compatibility with the existing DVD standard wil be needed for a long time to ensure a smooth transition to HDV.
The 'other' format has a good change of ending up as the consumer recording format.
I don't doubt that the movie industry only goes ahead after they made shure that copy protection is up to their requirements.
Every time I invest a large sum of money in a new technology, someone in the industry comes up with something nasty...
So we may have SACD and DVD-A still for quite a few time around.
But what is for ever on earth?

A nice two-page article presents a line-up of audiophile turntables (from Pro-Ject Debut, €180, to Linn LP 12/Lingo/Ekos, €6,300). This bi-monthly classical music magazine is available as free download (in German only).
