So with no tubes or coils of copper to justify it's existence, why do we have it? Don't we already have passives and TVC?
Putting aside the convenience of remote control:
* passives are beguiling but limited since they need to be used with short short cables and are extremely load sensitive. That is why they often come off sounding detailed but thin and dynamics constrained
* TVCs, IMO, still give the ultimate sound IF source and load impedances are friendly to each other. If we use a TVC we really need to build the system around it. A good TVC with switches and parts of worthy quality costs upwards of 1K$
* Both passives and TVC generally have fairly large steps due to the problem of finding a high quality switch with more than 23 steps (ie the Seiden 28 step alone costs well over $200). Also it is very difficult to make a TVC or even AVC with more than 23 steps.
* The Ultimate Volume Control has 127 steps for fine volume adjustment; volume control becomes more of an issue as we inevitably (because that's where the dynamics are) move into higher efficiency speakers. It's of paramount importance when using high efficiency horns where one step on the attenuator acts like an off/on switch.
* The Ultimate Volume Control is direct coupled in and out
* The Ultimate Volume Control also allows for use as a standalone linestage. Just install the optional LSK389 and now we have a unity gain linestage with 50 ohm output impednace and selector switching for 5 inputs as well as a direct (non-attenuated) line level REC out. Still direct couple
* attenuation is adjustable to as much as -68db and offers teh choice of standard or shunt mode.
