  BWS Consulting has a new integrated DVD transport/modified Bel Canto DAC machine that is really quite something, the price for such I imagine is higher than your cut-off pt., however, something to consider in the long run...

  Call John at Musical Design , he has a new transport around that price. He does use a DVD tranport.

  Just purchased a used Pioneer DVD 05 and had it modified by Dan Wright. Total came to around $650 with shipping leaving money for a power cord, cones, whatever.

  I've seen Pioneer Premier DV-09's on the used market in the $800 range. Of course, I paid over $2k for one about a year ago new. It has an excellent transport and has performed extremely well!!!

  But it's the unit I use as a CD transport. Not made anymore, and you may do better by getting two units. Or, the Sony S9000 ES is supposed to be a great CD player (w/SACD too) by itself - but for DVD it does exhibit the dreaded chroma bug (again, many don't see it).
