Hi. After a year of wallet-squeezing and wife-spoiling, I have come to a modest mid-fi arena (see my inmate system). Now the next step would be CD transport upgrade (I intend to implement some cosmetic mod to the current cheapo transport to contain spin noise, but that's another story).
I have done some research here and there and come up with some candidates; CEC TL2, Muse 8, Theta Carmen, etc. (I tend to agree with a theory out there that "don't be cheap on the front end.") For the space constraint (everybody has to comply with wife's needs, right?), DVD/CD transport is preferable.Question No. 1: Some say DVD player NEVER makes a GREAT CD transport. Does this concern apply also to those "high-end" DVD/CD transports such as Muse and Theta?
Question No. 2: Does Muse 8 work well with other DAC (in my case, PT combo) than Muse 296? It seems that the combination is almost a "must". Or, should I go with Muse 9, which is half cost but claimed to sound as good as 8/296 combo = does this mean there is no compromise on transport section? Hardly believable, though. Also, has anyone figured out how to connect Muse' I2Se and PT's I2S?
Question No. 3: Is Theta still serious about AUDIO? Their website seems to indicate their direction to DVD or Surround stuff. Some say "reliability problem" also. And where is CEC these days?
Question No. 4: Or, should I wait for PT's (or others') universal transport, which they supposedly have been working on. Any update on this?Well, I may have unintentionally cornered myself down here, but and therefore, ANY input concerning Digital Transport in general, such as "you are making a huge mistake", is also very much appreciated!

Follow Ups:
Muse has a new model, the Nine/Thalia. This is an improved version of the Nine/Signature. I heard it recently at a dealer's demo and was totally impressed with both its sonic and video quality. You ought to check this out.
Thanks!
Do you happen to know what was improved?
Of your specified options, Go with the 8 and worry about the cables later. Halverson never said that the 9 sounds as good as the separates with their enslaved I2S. Waiting for the PT transport is like waiting for Godot.
Walter,
Thanks! As to 9's performance, I found this thread;http://www.audioasylum.com/audio/digital/messages/7142.html Well, what do you think?
BTW, have you figured out how to connect your P-1A and 296 DAC via I2S connection?Ken H
If you decide to go the 296 route email me regarding the I2S cables.
walter,
I'm not sure whether I would go to 296 route, but even if I stay with P-3A, I would need the I2Se -> I2S connection between Muse 8 (or 9 transport version?) and P-1A. Please email me via AA mail system by clicking (i). Also, you can see my humble system, if you care...Regards,
Ken H
