I've had my SONY SCD-XA5400ES for quite some time now. Its a great player but I feel its getting dated. I am seriously considering a the new Marantz SA112S3. I just don't want to swap to a different sounding player
rather than a truly superior unit... Anybody here have had a go with both that can comment?

I would look into a used Esoteric player. They sound great and are built for a lifetime.

Depends on the player. Considering what looks like the region of the budget of the OP, it does not allow, even used, the top of the line players with the NEO mechanisms. More likely it will be something with, e.g. a UMK-5 mech.
Although the machines are well built the mechs and lasers do have a lifespan. With typical use the UMK-5 will have a cog that changes the redbook/SACD lasers fail at around 5 years and the mech will need replacing. So caution is in order.
On the whole I am not confident about used CD players as I am similarly not about used phono cartridges. Both are ultimately consumables.
You might want to wait for the Marantz SA10 which is coming out in a few months. It is supposed to be a completely new design, replacing the SA11, but will be much more expensive. I recently bought a Maantz SA14, with which I am quite pleased. (I decided against the SA11 because people were unclear about its DSD capabilities when used as a USB DAC.)
I am especially happy with the SACD performance of the SA14, but it is the only SACD player I have ever heard.
Actually it replaces the SA-7. The SA-10 is twice the price of the SA-11S3 which remains in the catalogue (here in the UK).
There is the Sony ES "house" sound, then, there is the Marantz "house" sound. Demo prior to any purchase.
The SA10 will replace the SA7.
The SA-11S3 is a different creature for a different customer.
I have the SA11S3 and really like it. I would love to hear the SA 10, but it's twice the price. The SA-11S3 has the Marantz house sound, that some people like and others don't. I like it. It sounds good with SACDs and more importantly, with CDs. Also, it has balanced outputs which is very important to me. I haven't heard the Sony, so I cannot really comment on it.
