Abe, I just got a new Pi 3 this week and it is much better than my old Pi Model B that I bought 5 years ago. The processing power and 1 Gig of Ram has helped some of the problems I had like syncing with my other SBTs.I have the HiFi Berry Digi+ Board on order. You can basically build the Bryston Pi Player for less than $100. So, why not? It's a fun project.

There is a new Digi+ Pro which is available for Beta software testing now. Best results will be with a direct linear supply.
Pi2 Design is also coming out with a new board with some cool features.
I have been looking at this new i2S re-clocker - they also have a DAC named Piano available..

This seems to be a step-up in design to target somewhat better sound quality..
I have seen that also. There is conversation on Diy. Some good comments so far.
