""Huh? ARM processors, as found on the SolidRun board, are the most popular processors used in smartphones... smartphones that need a computer for many functions. ;-) ""
So what?
That doesn't address the point that ARM processor board is convenient way to separate out just the processing part of the equation, - allowing for many other fields to "add-in" either more specific, or more general-multi-purpose functionality.
Exactly what John did with the design. He designed & built a great sounding single purpose board, (designed for high quality music playback), and used ARM's board with it.
Sonore also sells the more complete QUBOX device that doesn't sound as GOOD because it is MORE MULTI-PURPOSE.
THIS EXCELLENT POINT proves that eliminating video, multiple USB ports, OPTICAL SPDIF ports (hardware) helps to IMPROVE sound, and makes the device single purpose.
You are very confused about the role and importance of hardware. This goes along with the blind investment you have in trying to prove that hardware doesn't matter. This becomes really damning when you don't understand the philosophical concept of deductive logic & reasoning.

Follow Ups:
Read my post above. Many of the things you say are eliminated are not. They're built-in to the ARM processor itself.
What is "many?"RAM & processor....
No OS, no input (NIC), no output/display method: means that the ARM board is two very important parts in the whole system, - but not the whole system.

Define 'whole system'.
Go study the Freescale i.MX ARM processors and the SolidRun SoM products. It's all on the web. I'm not here to waste my time trying to educate those who refuse to learn.
