Interesting. Are you saying that physical CD played thru a CDP sounded better than Tidal?
I'm not subscribed to Tidal but I've read similar comments that it may not be quite up to par with CD's.

It really depends on the equipment. Tidal to me sounds basically identical to the CD version

It wasn't even close. Absolutely no dynamics, dull and lifeless.

Currently subscribe to TIDAL, QOBUZ(both 16/44.1 lossless FLAC) and ClassicsOnlineHD (claimed up to 192/24 depending on source using the OraStream engine) and have had DEEZER Elite (also 16/44.1 lossless FLAC)in the past.
Hardware (computer or streamer) makes a difference as does the DAC. Right now in my main system I can hear little difference between TIDAL and QOBUZ streaming through a software stripped and tweaked headless Mac Mini to a Multi-bit 8 X PCM1704 DAC and my best silver disk spinner (Marantz DV-9600) spinning the same CD.
Streaming TIDAL and QOBUZ through a SONOS Connect is a bit flat and maybe other streamers at the low end of the price curve are similar. And then there is the DAC part so who knows?
That said, IMNSHO, streaming over the interned CAN sound good IF you spend the time and effort that a dedicated audiophile normally tends to spend on these things.
I wasn't questioning if it *could* sound good. I figured it could since enough people here used it. I was just wondering if it was hires. I'm not sure he understood why I didn't like the sound. There was no soundstage. FWIW, the electronics were all Classe.
He was genuinely surprised when I asked to come back another day when he could set up better.

I have to wonder what the guy was running Tidal through vs the CDP he was using.
I'm late to this discussion, but it's been my my experience that the PC Audio used for demo purposes at Audio Stores has been along the lines of "quick & dirty" as far as setup is concerned.
As such, what you may be hearing is not a real indication of what PC Audio is capable of sounding like. I think PCs are great tools at processing music, but require much more work than Audio Components do to sound as "Musical"(which everyone has to decide for themselves where their threshold for this is)
