Hello,
Levinson 37 just started acting up last night. First the drawer was intermittently not opening and closing - cleaned off the rails, and now the drawer is fine.
The disc read problem has not been resolved. I let it sit overnight, and then it was reading a disc fine (seemingly). I got the transport back in the system, then it played for about 3 seconds and then it stopped. When I was in I gave the lense a very light wipe to clean off any residue, and maybe that is why it is not reading? Has anyone been through the process of diagnosing and repairing one of these? Any schematic out there? I would like to give it a try before sending it in for service.
Suggestions appreciated.....
Regards -- Roger
Follow Ups:
Got the Levinson 37 back, and swapped out the laser - no joy. With the original laser, the transport was reading the disc, then played for a short time (minute), then started skipping around (time left on track jumped down, jumped to next track, erratic). Putting the new laser in and the transport would not even read the disc. Tried a second backup laser I had and the same result. Put the original laser back in, and it is behaving the same as original.
Any suggestions as to what this might be?? I did lightly lube the insides of the CD Pro with the recommended lube in the recommended spots, so probably not dry.
I had also read that the motors are sealed bearing, and need no oil. Is this true/accurate? I'm getting pretty fast a getting the CD Pro open, so if oiling is what it needs it only takes a few minutes...
I am thinking my next step is to measure the power post regulators (if I can find a point to do that) and look at it on a scope. The independent service guy said that he has never had to replace an electrolytic cap on the Levinson 37....
Any suggestions or recommendations would be appreciated.

Not a good experience with the repair shop across a number of fronts - I had the transport shipped back 'diagnosed' but not repaired. Good news is that supposedly the transport is fully upgraded, but the diagnosis was a bad laser. Got different information from the repair shop and Levinson regarding the laser, so need to pull apart the transport when I get it back and figure out what is really going on. I think there is a pretty clear path to fixing this myself, but I need to check on a few things. Looking forward to digging into this.
Will update next week when I get the transport back and have a chance to peek inside....

Cheers Roger- keep us posted on your ML project.
Did you try cleaning then re-greasing the worm gear that the laser sled rides back and forth on.
Have seen dozens of CD players with TOC errors due to their laser sled inability to move all the way into the HOME position due to a grease/grime buildup (or dried grease) on the worm gear.
Thanks for the suggestion - that is the first thing I will do when I tear down the transport. Clean and lube and see if that fixes it. If that does not fix it, I'll put in a new laser and see is that does it (diagnosis from the repair shop).

Thanks for the suggestions. I ended up sending it in for service - the guy is certified by Levinson and sounded very competent. We ill see what comes back as the problem. The fact that two things happened at once put me off a bit.....
Keep us posted and feel free to give a shout out for your repair guy!
you might look into those two areas before shipping it off.

Thanks for the suggestions. I did lube the sled rails, and that helped a lot with the drawer. I am currently thinking that with both motors (or electronics) working badly at the same time, I may well have a power problem. I am planning to replace the electrolytic caps, and see if that makes a difference. I have also heard there have been cap leakage problems with the Levinson transports, damaging the PCBs, and I certainly don't need that.
I really like the transport a lot, and plan on keeping it for as long as I can keep it going. Worth getting a working familiarity with it.

Roger-
Lummy (Luminator) is not far from you (greater S.F. area). He can be an excellent resource and very helpful.
Best is to contact Mark Levinson for either service or Transport replacement, it is after all a vintage No. 37.

I've lived with three different samples of the Mark Levinson No, 37. Go to my homepage, and search for the many posts I've dedicated to this model.
Yes, my colleagues and I have encountered quirks and problems with the disc drives. On one unit, it would read the TOC maybe half the time, and then, it stopped playing all together. We had to ship the unit (we still had the original box and transport screw) down to an authorized SoCal repair shop. I think the cost of a new drive was $1400. So be prepared for sticke shock, if your unit does need a new drive.
Even new drives can be idiosyncratic. They sometimes fail to initialize the TOC. They sometimes forget the time mode. In these cases, you'll have to turn off the unit, then power it back up.
As I've covered in my posts, you can kick the performance of the No. 37 up several notches, by (a) substituting after-market fuses, and (b) finding a copacetic powercord. The stock unit already boasts top-notch sound. Implementing (a) and (b) makes the No. 37 state-of-the-art. This unit really does, on a sonic basis, show how superior good ol' Redbook CD can be.

Roger-
hopefully one of our resident (inmate) ML experts can assist you. There should exist several places to service the No.37
