In Reply to: RE: Am I losing my mind, is it possible to hear the laser on a CD player? posted by PAR on May 19, 2016 at 01:56:46
The BNC adaptor converted my digital out to an RCA based connector so I could use it with my DAC. Player is a Bel Canto CD-2. After reading what you said and not using the player for awhile this noise doesn't happen on every disc. Some discs are quiet and some are louder than others.
The transport is a top loading mechanism. Perhaps I hear this and am more aware of it because of that. It is a mechanical noise I am hearing. The ticking sounds like laser tracking, sometimes I do hear whirring. I haven't used a CD player like this in quite awhile as I usually use software transports.
Thanks for the help, I think I feel better now. Mechanical sounds are inherent with physical disc players if I understand correctly.
Follow Ups:
Over the years I have had players/transports using mechanismns from Philips, Pioneer, Teac, Teac Esoteric, Sony and OEM unts from unidentifiable suppliers. Both CD only mechanisms and CD/SACD ones. I have never had one that is always silent, there is always a disc or two that will cause the mechanism to make some kind of (quiet) noise whilst operating.
I haven't owned a top loader but I would imagine that a lack of a cover such as it appears to be in your attached image would, I guess, make such noises more apparent.
Anyway now I hope that you may be a bit more relaxed about it as it varies from disc to disc and if you agree that this is likely to be pretty normal. May you now be able to enjoy some music.
Thanks, I am listening and watching now.
I have had (still do have) only one top loader, and though I can't hear the mechs working from where I sit, I definitely can hear the whirrings when I get up close. It is quite a lot noisier than any other disc player I've ever had. It is also very simple and reliable...
whirring sound is far more noticeable on SACD than CD as SACD spins 2x faster. On my Marantz SA11 s1, I can hear that noise between tracks and when sound level is very low, but only on SACD play back.Instruction manual says"While disc is spinning, a spinning sound is heard or a slight vibration occur. Depending on the disc ,a spinning sound may occur or the unit may vibrate slightly due to eccentricity or such. This is not a problem with this unit"
