In Reply to: RE: Can the Oppo BD105 be upgraded to MQA via firmware update? posted by barondla on May 03, 2016 at 14:57:27
for Oppo to just have the Tidal ap be enabled. Most of the utility of MQA is in streaming and it would make little sense to add it to firmware for the player. Since Tidal will be the primary conduit for the MQA'd material, having Tidal distribute the decoder within their ap make a lot more sense for Oppo as well as other partners. My guess is that this would cost Oppo nothing, as Tiday would be the licensee.

There has been no indication that Tidal will include a MQA decoder in there software. You more than likely will still need an outboard decoder. I would love to see a decoder in Tidal but don't hold your breath. If you have something that says different please post it

Bob Stuart confirmed that a software decoder was built and could be implemented in existing products. I do expect Tidal to offer the decoder, especially now that there is a big licensee. It makes the most sense for Tidal to be the big distributor of the soft decoder rather than having products have to be individually certified. Think about who has the dollars here. It isn't Roon or Auralic, or Oppo or Meridian. It's the streaming service and the content owners. Perhaps the big Japanese manufacturers could a firmware decoder for their HT receivers, but for the vast majority of small high-end companies it just won't make sense. Stuart knows that...
I hope your right. The Meridian explorer2 sounds nice playing MQA but I would really like to hear my Audio-GD Master7 playing MQA. I wish Tidal would happen soon. Did Stuart know when?
