I'm not looking to improve the sound necessarily, but it seems the clamp on a new to me modded pioneer dv-s9 must have gotten minutely tweaked somehow during shipping. I'd rather just fix it then send it back. The guy is honest and packed it amazingly in a wooden crate! Shit happens.
Some cds are dead quiet in the transport, others emit a annoying ticking sound. All still track fine. If I put a small piece of scotch tape on both sides of the center hole, the sound disappears, confirming the clamp issue.
So I have 4 choices, let it make noise, tape all my cds, tear the thing apart down to the clamp and fix it (I have detailed instructions) or try one of those snake oil carbon fiber mats for $30.
Might try the mat until I get the balls to do cd player surgery.

Ever heard of this? I got 1 as a bonus when I bought my AH! Nejoe Tejoeb 4000. not sure what that would be in USD though.
I concur w/ the panel- fix the internal problem.
yeah, that's the plan. it's a bit involved as the clamp is buried under a mountain of solid copper and circuit boards, but it seems nearly every DV-09/DV-S9 you see on ebay... either are listed as "for parts/repair" because of a "scraping sound"... or they are sold, then the new buyer relists them as "for parts or repair" with a "scraping sound" LOL!
the instructions from the seller thankfully DO NOT have me taking off all the copper and circuit boards, but i do have to remove the front and side panels, manually slide a cd in as a spacer, then slide a small flat screwdriver between the "copper sandwich" to the clamp mount and gently push down on the mount at 3 points (not the clamp itself).
how the hell did these things make it all the way from japan when new? they probably got more delicate in their near 20 years of existence.

Sounds like a fun project-Robby.
Keep me posted and Happy Listening!
Anybody use one on a top loading player? Thanks.
it does sound interesting... I see them for around $30 shipped from Hong Kong on Ebay.
I added it to my take a look list.
I think you need to fix the issue inside. A mat of some kind could worsen things. You need to open it up and see whats going on. And Ive tried a few different mats and even tbough I always took time to properly affix it and they improved the sound a couple or three times I had to take the top off the CDP to unjam it from the mat coming off. With your situation it could be even worse.ET

It looks like a knockoff of the (considerably more expensive) Millennium carbon fiber mat I used to use. It might work, since the tape tweak you employed did, but even at that low price, I wonder if you'd be better served fixing the source of the problem: as you've discovered, probably the clamp (though, personally, I'd get a qualified tech to do it if you have ANY reservations about doing it yourself). It would probably be more expensive than that mat, but it would likely fix the actual issue rather than being a band-aid. Oh, and not every player will respond well to a CD mat. My Marantz SA-7S1 hated them, and I eventually stopped using them with that player after a few very close calls."Taping" every CD you play seems to be a hassle to me, and you'd use up a whole lotta tape, but it depends on your tolerance for that sort of thing.
Hope this helps at least a little. Good luck, and keep us posted!
