Based on my research so far, the Wyred 4 Sound DAC-2 DSDse has gone to the top of my list for more research.
My local retailer wants me to buy the Ayre Codex DAC ($1,795). Unfortunately, it only has USB and optical inputs requiring me to "re-wire" my cable box with HDMI to the Pioneer TV and then to the DAC. I do not like using an HDMI cable from the cable box to the Pioneer Elite TV and then an optical cable going to the DAC. If I connect the TV to the DAC, it also means I cannot easily switch the DAC in and out of the system. I prefer the audio signal going direct from the TiVo cable box to the DAC using the one optical cable (provides me the most flexibility).
Another retailer offered me an excellent discounted price on the exaSound e22 DAC (list is $3,500) but I am not familiar with this brand from Canada. The exaSound E2 DAC seems to be an excellent DAC and has some people recomending it. ExaSound is a new company and I prefer to buy from a more well established company. I like the fact that Wyred 4 Sound products are made in the USA.
In summary, I have received suggestions for the "Schiit" Yggdrasil, Lyngdorf TDAI 2170 ($5,000 integrated amp with DAC), NAD Masters M51 DAC, Ayre Codex DAC, Wyred 4 Sound DAC-2 DSDse ($2,600), Mytec Manhattan ($$$) and the exaSound e22 DAC ($3,500). I am sure all of these DAC's are excellent choices.
I am still reviewing the NAD Masters M51 DAC suggested above. I considered the Lyngdorf TDAI 2170 but, to be honest, I am not giving up my Ayre integrated. Beside, I like a separate DAC and not one included in the amplifier.
AudioStream reports "The Wyred 4 Sound DAC-2 DSDse is an extremely musical sounding DAC that does not superimpose a digital edge or glare to the sound. The DAC-2 DSDse does not sound thin or 2 dimensional. The Wyred 4 Sound had good body and weight that added a degree of realism to music reproduction not often found with DACs at this price. The excellent sound staging with PCM files was a real plus; especially for those that enjoy live recordings or orchestral music. The DAC's flawless function and performance was a joy to experience allowing me to concentrate on the music and not struggle with settings or other user rituals. In summary, I was impressed with the DAC-2 DSDse's overall level of performance given its reasonable price and feature rich offerings".
Wyred 4 Sound offers a 14 day trial period so I can demo the unit. I am in no hurry to make a decision so we will see. Thanks again for your help.
Follow Ups:
If I could afford a new dac, it would be the PS Audio Directstream or Directstream Jr.
Have you considered them?
Thanks. PS Audio DirectStream versions are more than what I want to spend on DAC. As I noted before, based on my research so far, the Wyred 4 Sound DAC-2 DSDse has gone to the top of my list for more research. I have spoken to them several times and they have been very helpful. I heard their equipment at the 2015 THE Show in Newport Beach and liked it.
