To be used to record ambient outdoor sounds. Need a good mike, too. What does a good mike cost?

Check out TASCAM. They make some inexpensive hand held recorders with built-in microphones. How much do you want to spend?

"A" mic: so you're going to get one and record mono? Also is everything going to run on batteries or AC? I ask because you'd better avoid mics that need phantom power if using battery power. Some of the portables do provide phantom power though.Condensors do better hf in my opinion and could provide better texture and overall frequency response on outdoor sounds though. Also are you doing urban where sounds are not so far away or rural where they might be far away?
The portable recorders are getting really cheap. Tascam has one with built in condensor mics that does upto 24/96 for $85. There are better ones too with built in mics but I'm not a fan ID rather have mics I like stand mounted for fielity and image.
