Which Pass do you have? I have not heard the 532 or 53's. I'm a bit surprised the 532 has a richer midrange over the Pass. Mine was an X250, I've heard the .5's are even warmer. I didn't think anything would unseat my Pass except another Pass. The odd thing I heard the 532h in my friend's system several times and I suppose I just didn't pick up what the amp was doing for the system. When I put it in my system I was amazed by the dynamics, details seemed to pop like live music, there was an increase in detail and resolution, all that with still good PR&T. Both brands are excellent amps, comes down to which presentation does it for you. The Pass I thought gave a lot of what you get from tubes but with the power and control of solid state. I would still like to hear a .8, I understand they are a revelation.
Back to digital, LOL. I can understand wanting to upgrade to do high res. It will be expensive to get something to compare or best what you have though in SQ. I would have thought ML to have something to offer by now.
I haven't heard one personally but the Schiit is supposed to be killer. The one nicknamed Yggy, I forgot it's actual name. Lampizator's are also exceptional, I've heard a few of those. The PS Audio Direct Stream is good. The one I heard may be too analytical for your taste but there have been upgrades to firmware and I understand different filters to choose from. If price wasn't a factor the Bricasti I really like and is probably my favorite to date. From what people say and your budget you should investigate the Schiit.

Hi
I have the X350.8. It is more open sounding than the 0.5 series. Dynamics take a step up and imaging and soundstaging are very good. It brings the recording venue into your space in a hear through way (or is it the other way round?)The bass slam and speed are there too and it is visceral sounding although not as much as say an older Krell. There is less of a midrange bump and so it seems less warm and vocals are not pushed forward as much. The "mouth" is very much there, replete with micro detail. Highs are more extended but grainless at the same time (I've read about that before this, wondered what it meant and didn't think I would say that). If my memory serves me right, the 0.5 could be a bit hard in the treble although that could be impedance mismatch with my preamp. I wouldn't say it is tube-like (nor would I have said that the 0.5 is tube like) at least not in that Conrad Johnson way.
The ML 532 is fuller in the midrange but less open sounding and more rolled off on the top. Bass slam is also not as good as the 0.8. If I recall correctly, your 532H is more polite sounding. My impression was it was detailed and refined but with less body, although I heard it in a ML (no tubes at all) and Revel system.
Yes, you are right. After looking at some options, it does seem that it will cost a lot more to match the sound quality from the old Mark Levinson digital now.
I did look at the Yggy and it seems like a good bang for the buck but it doesn't do DSD and while I have very little material as far as that's concerned, I just don't want to rule it out in future.
Nice, the 350.8. I believe a system should be balanced throughout regarding capability, with that being said I feel the source is important because nothing we can do downstream will allow us to hear anything lost from the source. So do the best we can there, then maintain it as it travels.
Yeah, Pass isn't "tube like" in the CJ way, although I've had CJ and enjoy it's presentation in the way it seems to breathe soul into the music, Pass was able to present textures and colors in the music not normally noticed in solid state amps.
Yes, I like CJ too. If I could afford higher powered CJ and didn't miss some bass slam and speed occasionally on pop or rock, that is what I would get.
You hit it right on the head - CJ breathes soul into the music. The Pass brings out the natural timbre.
