Toslink has the REAL advantage of NO POSSIBLE ground loop or electrical ground between source and DAC.
Too much is never enough
Follow Ups:
Yes, it does. But really, is that the most important part of a digital link? It can be done perfectly well with "wires", and is done well all the time regardless of wired method, at vastly higher bit rates, in vastly more important applications. Also regularly done poorly too...just like Toslink is. I would like to think that in the kind of gear most people here are talking about, especially DACs, that these things are done properly. I would *like* to think that...I really would...
Some people would say the real *useful* most important part of an optical link in an application is its security. Which also goes with the "no RFI" aspect that some like too. Don't want anyone eavesdropping on your tunes now.
In and of itself, it is neither 'good' nor 'bad'.
In fact, up to about 192/24 PCM, it CAN be as good as COAX with a proper cable, transmitter and receiver.
But a $2K or $4K DAC with a crappy 12M TOSLINK receiver that can barely do 96K, if that, coupled with a plastic TOSLINK cable from Radio Shack plus a $1 adapter to plug said Radio Shack plastic fiberoptic cable into a MAC headphone jack/TOSLINK connector and we have a system that is of no use at all when discussing audio.
That would be taking into account that the headphone jack in said MAC may well be capable of better audio up to PCM 192/24 than any of its USB outputs.
Hi and thanks a lot for the kind advice.
This is exactly the main reason why i am looking into optical link.
But i also understand that the only serious way to realize it is the AT&T standard, more rare than a green elephant.
Actually i do not understand why it is no more common for units from mid price up ... is it so expensive to build ?
However i will try and listen.
If i will find a nice price i will try also some reclocker to cope with possible higher jitter issues.
I have in mind the Apogee Big Ben for this purpose.
A little on the expensive side though but a serious piece indeed.
Thanks a lot again.
Kind regards,
bg
