Not quite what the title implies.
So, I've got myself a Luxman DA-06 DAC. It's really good. It sounds really, really, really good playing native DSD especially, SACD and vinyl rips.
However, I noticed this: PCM sounds great too, but if I use HQPlayer to convert to DSD128 on the fly and give it to the DAC the dynamics disappear. Drum transients go to nothing in comparison. Why would that be? Is this something endemic to DSD, to HQPlayer, or to this DAC?
(Ok, I don't think it's the first because NATIVE DSD recordings don't have this issue.)
Follow Ups:
I cannot comment on what you're hearing but I have always felt that the DA-06 was a bit dynamically challenged with whatever I fed it. Otherwise it was a very smooth sounding DAC, but lacked the dynamics that I enjoyed in other DACs. Here's the Luxman DA-06 that I owned a couple years ago.
I've owned many DACs over the years. The link below does not include the PS Audio NuWave DSD DAC which I consider to be an incredible bargain for what it delivers sonically. I presently own and use the Ayre QB-9 DSD DAC and the PS Audio NuWave DSD DAC.
Abe,
What is the monitor shown in your photo of the Ayre DAC and amp?
That 'monitor' is simply an iPad on a stand. It's a couple generations old but does the job. I'm not using it as a full fledged monitor. I use the FREE Remote App from the App Store on the iPad to control music playback on the Mac Mini music server. I normally have the iPad at my side to control music playback from across the room.
I'm using a new iPad Air 2 for the same purpose with Tidal streaming on Oppos. I'm using the Oppo control app. I also have a Mac Mini set up to input to an Oppo 105D via asynchronous USB, but now I wonder if it might be better to input directly to the Bryston SP3 rather than 105D then to the SP3 via HDMI.
You are probably right that it is not the most dynamic DAC in the world, but boy it sounds good overall.
I agree. It's a very nice sounding DAC. I thought it was very smooth on DSD and PCM. I just like a little more 'bite' and big dynamics.
I've gotta tell you, Abe, I'm listening now and I'd have to disagree - its macrodynamics are quite good when it's in the material.
Perhaps it was a system synergy thing. Were you using a passive linestage?
The rest of my system does dynamics very well and the DAC is not holding it back; it's as dynamic as my vinyl rig and another, well-regarded R2R DAC I have as well.
As this is really a question about conversion rom PCM to DSD using the HQ player you may find best informed responses over on the PC audio forum.
Yeah, I meant to post this there actually. Thanks.
