See the link below for a review of it and its matching DAC.
The SACD ability of the transport will not be available to you unless you use a suitable Esoteric ( or posssibly Teac) transport with the ability to handle the encrypted DSD data.
The P-05 contains a VMK-05 mechanism. Unless you can find a source with back stock, spares are apparently not now available from Teac/Esoteric. There is a generic fault with the transport at around 5 years of use when a (plastic?) cog in the OPU tends to fail (I guess stripped teeth). Fixing this requires replacement of the entire OPU. However the fault mainly affects the SACD laser when the mechanism changes from the redbook one and replay of redbook can be unaffected - at least at the beginning AFAIK. However I would ascertain the situation before purchase as this may be the reason ror the sale.

Thanks for all the great information!!
Does anyone have any suggestions for a Cd transport with a budget of approximately 3k. It needs to have an aes/ebu digital output.
If AES/EBU is essential then your choice will be very limited. The vast majority of transports or players that can be used as transports only have coax and/or toslink outputs.I am not in your country so do not know the used prices of equipment. For $3K you might get a used dCS Verdi or a later dCS Paganini transport (though I think that the latter may be a bit over $3K ?). All have AES/EBU. The Paganini has an Esoteric UMK-05 mechanism although spares are definitley available in this case as dCS have a huge stock. You need to watch out for the software installed as the latest version can change the AES/EBU outputs from PCM to DSD. This can be changed back via the menu.
Note that for data rates over 24/96 via dCS your DAC will need to handle dual AES/EBU. For DSD/SACD (BTW the Paganini incorporates a PCM/DSD upsampling facility so you can upsample on the fly), a dCS DAC is required.
A used dCS Puccini player would also fit the bill but I guess would be well over budget.

I seem to have inadvertently written "transport" twice. I meant an Esoteric (or Teac) DAC in the second half of the second paragraph.
if a simple but high quality machined-alloy replacement could be fashioned for it? Seems an incredible waste of a whole mechanism, as a result of this weak link.

Yes, a nice idea but of course you can't tell if a harder alloy replacement wouldn't then strip the cog that drives it!It's all reminiscent of the cog that went bad in the Sony SCD-1 ( for those with , not too long, memories).

Thanks! for sharing- PAR. I love Esoteric spinners for their SACD playback only.
