Thank you for the link. I looked through the manual, but unfortunately there is no info which clarifies this.

It says that it uses a total of (4) 12au7s.2 per buffer stage and 2 for voltage gain.Recommended are the Amperex PQ and Radio Technique.I'm sure the Mazda French military "Cifte" would also work in the RTs ' place.
Had you thought about sending Cary an e-mail and asking them to disclose which is which?
I would think that the "buffers" would be located closer to the outputs of the unit.

Thanks for the info. I've talked with Cary and they said their documentation was sparse for this unit and they are trying to track it down. The wiring for the tubes is hidden below a metal plate that the sockets are attached to, but I'll probably remove this and see which pair of sockets is attached to the outputs of the unit. I was just looking to avoid disassembling part of the player if someone here already knew the answer.
