Bit of a quandry.
Too many Choices. Not enough Coin to satisfy them all.
Notwithstanding that I'm tiring of constantly buying New gear to keep up with the latest Audio.. much of it subsequently proving to be.. Much less.. than the Brochure Babbles imply..
So.. get the Allegedly decent transport gizmo and trust to it's onboard Dac?
Or simply sidestep the transport notion and get a reasonable DAC?

Why would you want an inexpensive DAC, when you can get one built into the CD player? I think the DAC is useful for computer audio because of the compact dimensions. You will still need something to put the CDs in.
IMO, of course. No experience with any of them, though.
A reasonable point.
But the Few reviews of the CD200 Only talk about it as a good Transport. Little to Nothing about it's sounds...a Serious sign methinks.Agreed .. Likely a Bifrost Schiit could be a better Choice of affordable standalone dac gizmo.
Alternate B which is looking better each day... is to simply Buy an Emotiva ERC-3....And move on.
No desire to waste my days obsessing over the relative merits of Kilobuck Chip boxes.

I have a Tascam CD200 that I got to use as a transport with a Luxman DA-06 dac.
This dac buffers and reclocks the data and I guess it does this very well, as I can't detect any difference in sound with various transports including the Tascam, an old Nohr player, an Astin Trew player, and the excellent Heed transport.
Naturally I tried the Tascam as a player - and found it very decent; what's more, the headphone output is also decent. OK, I get better results from the Luxman dac, the Heed DT/DA transport and dac, and my superb Accuphase DP-510; and from my modded Cayin headphone amp.
But that doesn't alter the fact that the Tascam makes *good* music with no trace of the digital nasties you might expect from a cheap player. With a decent pair of headphones you get pretty close to high end sound. I was so impressed that I bought one for a friend and he's most pleased with the sound.
Used.. inexpensive and works 'as advertised' happily.
One never knows with used gear. Surprisingly good sounds too.
