Has anyone run into any info as to the output specs? Wondering if its limited ala Sonos or could possible do higher rates. In other words any idea what file formats it will support. -Is output set at CD-quality (16-bit/44.1kHz) or will it support "hi-res" audio up to 24-bit/192kHz?

I am somewhat excited by the news of Chromecast Audio, which at $35 offers optical spdif output with "no audio compression" (according to the linked article).
Even if one buys both Chromecast 2 and Chromecast Audio, it's still only $70, so let's hope the audio side of things sound good.
I bought a chromecast awhile back and have it to a HDMI to optical converter (old link to a post linked below), this new audio thing looks interesting though.
It appears you can "root" the device and use it with your own software.

seems like a lot of work though. worth a shot maybe.
Yeah, a lot of work. And requires some equipment that I don't have that costs almost as much as the Chromecast.
Unfortunately, the only reason why I might want to reflash my Chromecast would be so that I could use it to play Amazon Prime movies. (I see that there is a war between Google and Amazon over format support.) Unfortunately, the issue here is undoubtedly DRM related, and I have no interest in violating the DMCA. My hacking days were over in 1963 after I got busted by ATT and the FBI for building the first Blue Box east of the Mississippi.

I remembered these things, just right before the internet.
now you can't even find a pay phone.
Our group didn't build a red box. We weren't trying to cheat the phone company, just figure out how the long distance network really worked. (This served us in good stead, as years later when we read our FOIA files we learned that ATT had asked the Deputy DA (Fed) for Boston for a criminal prosecution of our group, but he declined because we hadn't broken any laws. Later, all kinds of Fascist laws were passed, some even before 9-11.)
We did build a "black box" for the callee. This enabled calls to be received, but the caller would not get billed because the accounting system thought the calls were not completed.

I also remembered these credit card generators for DOS, which could be used to sign up for some AOL accounts, to grab access to the internet as it was starting.
I gave up I think I was 17, also about the same point I got my first real job. Lord knows I could take down the whole frigging thing, it is very fragile.
it is much worse now, now they'll just kill you, like 9.11. no questions asked.

It's even worse. They may just kill you if you are sleeping innocently in your own bed and are a little child who has never done anything wrong. Or if you are running a hospital they will bomb you and kill the staff and patients.

you can't go back to sleep once you wake up so to speak.
I share your misfortune being aware, it is a burden.
Take care.

nice, we are both on lock down not accepting PMs, you should check out the movie "sneakers" from the mid 1990s, if you haven't already. ;)
Lockdown is a bug in the Asylum software. This has happened several times.
I will unlock my profile until the next time the gods lock it.

Despite limited app support at the moment... It's worth noting that BubbleUPNP can cast to the original Chromecast and also has Tidal integration so there's a good chance one can cast to the Chromecast Audio with Bubble(using Tidal or from their locally managed library).
I have found no info on that, looks interesting. But I am sticking with my modded Sonos Connect.
