Thanks. I have almost 10,000 songs on the player now. That's about 350gb of data. It took 26 hours to copy the files from my computer and another 4 for Gracenotes to update the metadata. The iPhone and iPad apps are fantastic, giving me total control over the player. I can even edit the metadata from my chair across the room. Out of the box with maybe 10 hours of listening on it, and it is sounding very sweet. Looks like for once, Sony got it right.

Try the Precision Oversampling, DSEE Auto, and Remastering Engine On.
Check, check and double check. I set it up that way. Truly amazing.

Of course not!!!
OK, I can live with the 'smooth' part.
it doesn't.
Not there yet!
This player is in my secondary system and I have made a lot of changes to it so I can't be sure everything that I am hearing for the better can be solely attributed to the Sony.
I'm very happy with it and after I turned off internet and system standby, I was even happier with it. Now the player no longer loses connection with the router due to going into standby mode. I have the ios app for both my iPhone and iPad mini and I really like the interface for the iPhone.

I turned of stand-by too.
I use a 50' Ethernet cable for updates and Internet Radio, which is excellent and fun.
Can't tell any difference if it is unplugged for listening to Downloaded Files/Rips.
There was a point where I thought it had improved, so maybe break-in does occur.
I never use my Sony 5400 anymore.
