Hi Ken,
I found that post, 2015/09/03.
You were doing some crazy things five years ago. What are you doing now?
I normally wouldn't take this thread off on a tangent like that, because I really want to discuss discreet ladder dacs, but I don't think it matters at this point.

I'm still designing and constructing my own experimental DACs, hoping to find the digital holy grail of emotionally satisfying playback that's fatigue free, yet still wideband and dynamic sounding. One thing I've concluded, at least to my own satisfaction, is that not only is such sound quality possible, but that it doesn't necessarily require the application of heroic expense. For example, my experiments have shown me that the typical linear phase, half-band brickwall digital filter incorporated in to most commercial DAC chips is NOT a primary source of the problem of unsatisfying digital sound quality. The expense of a custom digital filter development is not necessary. I'd experimented with NOS for a number of years, but eventually found that for all their obvious benefits, their audible drawbacks, such of constrained sounding dynamics, and pinched soundstage, were continually distracting. My experiments have led me to believe that unsatisfying digital sound is mostly due to the insufficient addressing of certain implementation details, some of which are unexpectedly significant. So, my present avenue of experimental exploration is focused on getting those certain implementation details more effectively addressed. Which, while not particularly costly in terms of parts, is costly in terms of time consumed in discovering which are significant, and then in how to audible minimize their impact.

Glad to hear you are still at it Ken. I hope when you get it all down on the implementation side you will share it with us. Enjoy!
