jedrider raises some good points. Do all of your CDs sound the way you describe, or just some of them? If it's only some, then your digital system may actually be revealing the differences in various digital recordings. Many older CDs exhibit an character that I would describe as sounding uninteresting or boring. If, on the other hand, all of your digital content is afflicted, then the right new DAC box may provide a satisfying solution. Whatever the root cause, know that you can attain musically interesting, low-fatigue digital playback without paying a King's ransom.

I agree that better CD playback, different recordings will exhibit unique sonic qualities..... Just like with vinyl playback.
I do have a lot of CDs that do not sound that good compared to their vinyl counterparts. But then I have CDs that trounce the records. For example, the remix of West Side Story sounds fabulous on my system. It sound so good that it has lead me to conclude that plain-Jane 44.1 CD is capable of great sound. It is just that its capabilities are seldom utilized. The problem is how they cut the CDs.
