Even if levels weren't matched exactly, it's fair to assume that they were at least close, at these two listeners' comfortable levels.
Have you ever heard slightly mismatched levels responsible for "dull, flat, dim, 'not as vivid'" sound? Not me, that's for sure.
We are talking about CD playback (a severe compromise in itself), on a player that, even with the mods, is pretty far from the SOTA digital playback. The fact that it sounds better than some computer setup (which is even farther from SOTA, as far as computer setups go, I'm sure), doesn't tell me personally much of anything.
If the levels are far enough apart (e.g. greater than 1 dB) then it will be obvious that the levels have not been matched. If the levels are only slightly different (e.g. 0.25 dB) then the levels may appear matched, but it is probable that the slightly louder will sound better.

Yes, I have. Everything is relative.

Often so in listening tests, but it can be system and/or room dependent to some degree.
That's why most industry professionals spend a fair amount of time insuring matched sound levels when evaluating gear.
