I have an old Oppo 980 that served me well enough to occasionally play SACDs, HDCDs and DVD-As in my 2 channel system, but it finally died. Oppo would fix it for $35 plus shipping but their new gear was just too enticing.
I have had my heart set on the 105 but wasn't convinced by any audio only reviews to make a $1200 purchase, especially just to play hi-rez discs
Recently, I got a great deal on a 103 which has blown me away. even on red book it is unbelievably resolving, though on some cds a touch edgy, but on hi-rez- oh my
I read where some people bashed the hybrid SACD offerings, but am very pleased with how much better they sound than my redbook counterparts, including the Norah Jones hybrid SACD, which got hammered pretty good. Could be something else making it sound unsatisfactory.
I just upgraded my Clear Day shotgun pure silver cables to 2 pair of WireWorld Eclipse 7 @ $500/8ft pair. Just breaking them in now, but they are much richer and fuller in my solid state system than the Clear Day pure silver shotguns I had been using
I had been trying to sell my W4S MC 250/500 but no mas
The WWs are definitely worth their price
The man I purchased the 103 from wants it back in a few months (he needed the money to buy a motorcycle) so he gets first dibs, then I will get the 105D, which has dif balanced outs and volume control, though that won't work here as I use the Paraound P5 preamp bass management circuit to dial in the woofers
So my Pioneer is now out of the system
Glad I took the plunge

What I really like is the ability to stream content from my LMS based music server. I'd rather not shuffle CDs about.
Perhaps it is worth it for playing multichannel SACDs though. :)
I'm setting up a secondary system in the living room and had been planning to use an Oppo 95 via balanced to a Parasound A 21 with HDMI to a new Sony 65XBR850C. I don't know how good the audio of the Sony will be, so one possibility that has occurred to me is to move my Oppo 105 from the media to the living room, run the DirecTV mini through it with balanced audio to the A 21 and video to the Sony. Question: Given that I don't use analog from the 105 in the media room, would I be losing anything if I replaced the 105 in that setup with a 103D?

By looking at the Oppo site, it does appear to me that if you don't use either set of analog outputs, you are bypassing the audiophile enhancements the 105 offers over the 103.
I love my Oppo 105 but to hear this machine at its best I float it on Gershman Acoustics levitation devices. And use Essence of Music, cd/dvd/bluray treatment. Bote the Levatation devices and the Essence of music treatment made more of an improvement in my system than cables or power cords which also were an improvement. The Oppo deserve the love..:)..cheers, lloyd
Mine is resting on Herbies cups with wooden balls in between, resting on 2 large Harmonic Resonance boards with Machina Dynamica springs in between
Than you already know how well the Oppo responds to such treatment. Do give the Essence of Music a try sometime. It is simply stunning. Check out the reviews on the website. I can't mention this cd treatment without sounding like I'm gushing...but it's simply the best treatment I've ever used or tried! Period! cheers, lloyd
I have tried many different cd treatments. Most oxidize over time.
Instead I wash each cd to remove any mold release mediums
The stock form of the 103 + 105 are okay at best. They must be modded in order to really shine.
I disagree that 'it is ok, at best'
It's actually quite good, but will likely require a change of cabling, and if used with common (multichannel)intergateds, will probably not reveal its inner self
As to upgrading it, I have had a lot of gear upgraded over the years to very nice improvements, but before going down that road I chose to upgrade speaker cables. I would also change my interconnect but I have several XLR cables which cost near as much as the 105D, so will wait

Feel better now? :-)
Is a Blu-ray player a REAL audiophile piece? Hard to say but at least the HA-1 is ONLY a DAC/Preamp/Headphone Amp with no Home Theater ambitions, which I suspect is the point.
My CD/SACD player?
A Marantz DV-9600, a formally $2K DVD player picked up on ebay a year or so ago for $350. No Blu-ray so cheap.
The Oppo 105 also has a very fine headphone amp (according to one of the reviews) built in, probably the same circuitry as the HA 1
HA-1 sports a class A balanced output with discrete transistors and runs so hot they have to put a big vent on top of the unit.
If you put your hand on top of the OPPO 105 and it ain't hot in ain't Class A. :-)
