This is an exceptionally fine sounding DAC! I tried the stock EH tubes and also some 1960s Mullards, but prefer the better tonal linearity and treble extension of the solid state output. 200+ hours of break in is probably the minimum; I gave it about 550 hours.
I enjoyed the Cary DAC-100t but, after a while, wanted better focus and resolution. I also tried the amazingly detailed Auralic Vega but wanted more warmth. The PS Audio DirectStream DAC could use a bit more reality/humanity, although a later software version than Pikes Peak might provide it. Definitely a Goldilocks dilemma! The Cary DAC-200ts provides the detail and resolution of the Vega with the warmth of the DAC-100t. Bulls eye!
Regarding upsampling: I use JRiver and set it to upsample. I rip CDs at 44.1kHz WAV. These sound best upsampled to 176.4kHz, or 4 times. Upsampling 8 times to 352.8 does not sound as good. My 24/192 rips of vinyl - upsampled 2x to 384k - are darn close to listening to the LP.
The Cary DAC-200ts is a very good DAC!
Happy listening.

How does it compare to the Ayre QB-9 DSD DAC???
I confess to cluelessness on the relative sound quality. I think the Cary wins on features, though.
