I am using a coaxial cable from my Sony BDP-S6500 Blu-Ray player to my Musical Fidelity M1 DAC. It sounds great.
My next goal was to improve the audio from my Pioneer TV. I tried the optical (Toslink) output from my Pioneer TV to my Musical Fidelity M1 DAC but discovered it did not work (no signal from TV). Since I am using HDMI from my cable box to my TV, the optical output signal is blocked. Pioneer said there is NO digital signal if HDMI is used for the input.
I then noticed my TiVo Cable Box has an optical digital output connection (Toslink). I connected my Wireworld Supernova 7 Glass Toslink cable from my cable box to my Musical Fidelity M1 DAC and it worked. Well, not exactly. I had to change my TV audio settings to PCM output and then it worked.
The sound is much improved from using my cable box RCA's to my Ayre AX-7e amplifier. I am running a balanced cable from my MF M1 DAC to my balanced Ayre AX-7e amp. The MF M1 DAC has four source inputs.
I noticed the sound was clearier, more open and easier to listen to. If you are looking to improve the audio sound from your TV, you might consider using your cable box's digital output to a DAC.
Follow Ups:
from the digital outs. The only dac I could find to accept that, is the Oppo 105. The difference is not that much better than the analog out of the cable box.
AB.
In the audio menu of most cable boxes, they give an option on the digital out for dolby digital (bitstream) or stereo (pcm). If you change to the stereo option then you're good to go with a 2 channel dac. Perhaps the Comcast box doesn't give this option, but most do.

Hi !i am watching Netflix using a pc > HDMI cable > Panasonic plasma tv
the stereo analog outs of the tv are connected to a cheap but clean sounding headphone amp from SMSL (in the link).
Through an akg k501 headphone the sound is surprising.
I can ear very well details in the live recordings.
I am sure the 3 meters long rca cable from the tv to the HP amp is very low quality and it is holding back the overall performance.
I use for convenience because i have the HP amp by my side.
However i am impressed by the analog sound out of the tv.
I heard a rumor that some good quality tvs have nice sounding internal dacs. To try is free. No pain and maybe some gain.
I tried also the headphone out from the tv ... but there is a volume control that can lower the sound quality.
Kind regards,
bg

I run the analog outputs from my Samsung LED 7000 series HDTV into my Pass Labs control preamplifier. It sounds very good to me through my Thiel CS3.7 speakers.
Hi and sorry for the late reply.
Thanks a lot for the very interesting information that confirms my experience.
So it seems that in some TVs the internal conversion is of good quality.
It would be interesting to see some measurements also from the analog outs ... maybe there would be surprises.
I normally use HPs because i like watching tv late in the night.
I am impressed by the ambient noises ... they stand out quite clearly.
Instead dialogues sometimes are not that good ... i do not know if the problem is the tv or the actual recording.
Thanks again.
Kind regards,
bg

A development I found annoying.
Jack
Our main TV is a Sony Bravia in the family room. Like many other Sony's they still provide an analog audio output. In our case, it's just a 3.5mm mini stereo jack behind the TV. There are benefits to this which we've used in the past.
For example, when we had our ZEVOX soundbar hooked up to the TV, we used the analog output from the Sony to drive the soundbar. The benefit in this case was that we could use the Sony remote (or the programmed cable box remote) to adjust the Volume output w/o having to use the ZEVOX remote. One less remote to deal with.
In the present setup we're using the optical output from the Sony TV to drive a cheapie DAC behind the Marantz integrated amp. In this case we are forced to use the Marantz remote and the cable box remote.
So on the Sony we do get output from TOSLINK Optical as well as the analog 3.5mm jack even though our sources come into the TV via HDMI.
Hi and sorry to hear that.
And i am surprised about the Pioneer digital out not working.
This is very annoying also.
I tried the toslink out from my tv and was working quite ok also.
One thing is sure ... when i go back to the internal speakers of the TV i am shocked by their poor sound.
They are extremely low quality.
Almost unbearable actually.
Kind regards,

I ended up using HDMI ARC (audio return channel){same HDMI cable as video from BD player to TV} from my TV to my Oppo 103 which has analog out to my amp. It works well, and cuts down on the number of cables used.

Hi ! very interesting !
i did not know that the Oppo 103 had a HDMI in ... very very good.
Other solutions that i have not tried could be the HDMI switchers like the one in the picture
but i guess that the very good ones (professional like Gefen) are very very expensive
Kind regards,

The Oppo can accept audio Input from the same HDMI output that I;m using to send signal to my TV. This may be the way things go in the future.
I had a 2-way HDMI switcher that was rather cheap. Monoprice has them. It worked well.

" The Oppo can accept audio Input from the same HDMI output that I;m using to send signal to my TV "Hi ! it is clearly a great brand making really outstanding products
and i am sure that the AV quality is very high
But lately i found myself watching a lot Netflix and streaming cd ripped and stored in a Nas ... so i am more intrigued by AV streamers, possibly with a great spdif out.
I am a little worried about the transport mechanisms ... they can develop issues. But i guess the streaming part of the units will still work anyway. I could look for an Oppo like the 103 pretty soon.
Maybe i will find some nice bargain ...
Thanks again for the very interesting information.
Kind regards,

I use the Coax out from my Genie Sat Box to Mytek/Marantz Amp./Kef R300/Rel T5.
It is 16/48, and the Low Notes of Doom and Dread on lots of shows are excellent!
Since I am using HDMI from my cable box to my TV, the optical output signal is blocked. My Sony TV outputs a TOSLINK optical signal even though the TV is driven by our Cable Box via HDMI cable. Perhaps there's a setting in your Pioneer that you might be overlooking? A setting to ensure 2-ch PCM output?
In any case, driving just about anything EXCEPT the TV's internal speakers will be a huge improvement!

Pioneer Customer Support confirmed that if HDMI is used as input, the Pioneer TV does not output a digital signal. I also called a dealer who confined this is correct. I am using the cable box Toslink output to my DAC so that is the better connection without using the TV.
