Was it the bit stream?
The matched transistor analog output stage?
This unit was in my system for over 15 years.
Memories of other beloved players welcome.
When the HK died I tried a NAD that failed quickly and then converted to a computer based playback.

..."Was it the bit stream?" Maybe.

"The unit was in my system for over 15 years." Mystery.
I'm being serious here. I can't think of any better answers.

Good article- G2.
I like the older players as well, as most, if not all were made in Japan.
Today's made in china junk, cannot compare, IMO.
HK for a mass market component boasted some sophisticated layout.
The mother board uses extensive ground planing and each major section is separated on the Board: power supply, servo section, DAC section ,and the analog stage. VERY, very few other machine regardless of cost have such sophistication.
Incidentally I am surprised to hear your machine went down. I sold them new and as far as I know all are still operational. Of yeah an occasional belt change, maybe, but nothing serious.
If the laser is not focusing try using a small screwdriver and prying up the CD turntable just a bit. The constant slamming of the magnetic clamping chuck eventually move the turntable down on the spindle and out of the focal range of the laser.
If I remember it was a laser issue My friend's unit is still in service and has never been repaired probably 23 plus years. I am tempted by the ads for used ones once in a while.
