My favorite DACs are 1990s vintage.... Or in other words, I *like* "outdated" DACs.... [-;

For me the PCM1704 chip produces the best sound I've heard to date.

Which DAC are you using?

I went for something simpler, from Lite Audio - their DAC83. It's a great chip, the 1704.

I think Paul Klipsch said that.
still using mine in a garage system along with my Sony xa20es cdp.
JeffH-
those 1990's Sony ES spinners are still killer player(s).
With their weighted rock solid transport.
Considering 90's DAC are your fav. The California Audio Sigma and Sigma II were super popular 90's DACs. The Sigma II upgraded the DAC to 24/96.

Todays best DACs simply smoke those oldies. Have you heard a modified Yggdrasil? Simply marvelous. The reduction of jitter....the sophisticated digital filters, the better output stages, the sophisticated DACs, the better power supplies....and of course, tweaking.....has made CDs sound like never before (and I mean, in a better way).
I read the lit page for the Schiit Yggdrasil..... It's a 21-bit DAC, quite unusual.....
BUT.....
It's actually closer to a 1990s design (20 bits) than a recent design (24 bits)....
I'd do a shootout with the DAC section of the Philips CDC-935.... But I'd need one loaned to me.... I cannot afford to shell out two grand for a DAC. (My financial situation isn't nearly as good as it was 15 years ago.)
To answer the ops question. What do you mean by improve? I had the 777 for many years and now have a Metrum Hex. The hex is just more musical than the Sony. More resolution and a much more beautiful sound. I have heard the Vega at shows and it certainly a highly regarded dac but will you like it. Only you can answer that question

Why do you like outdated DAC's?
"Why do you like outdated DAC's?"
I just like how they sound.... I generally prefer them over products that have come out in more recent time.
There are a few recent products I do like (the Schiit BiFrost Uber for one), but to my ears, DAC products marketed during the 1990s sound more natural than products marketed since 2005.
I hear ya. I just bought an Audio Research DAC-1, introduced to the market in 1991, and WOW--what an improvement.
