you tell me where and how I can wipe out a HP Stream tablet and install iOS.- Does not being able to install Android on the iPad make the iPad work only with Apple products? No, it still works with several non-Apple products.
- Does buying a Mac force you to use it with only Apple products?

I resisted but I have to throw in my $.02 :)
I have fond memories of running my Power PC 7200/75 with a 4 gig external SCSI drive. No USB, 40mb of ram cost $100 but Mac OS 8 was sooo much better than Windows 95! Apple isn't like that anymore. Now if you don't buy newer hardware that you don't really need you end up not being able to update your browser. Why does iPhone have to use a different cable when every other phone that uses micro USB? Besides Macs are all x86 architecture now, all PC hardware with a proprietary BIOS, that's why you can run Windows on a Mac, and for a while with a boot loader you could run OSX on a PC, if you got compatible hardware. Same parts, they just charge more. (End Apple rant).
As for the Bryston, it looks like a CD rom in a nice case. Why can't someone make a DAC with USB that can control an external carom drive?
I'm not understanding some of your complaints.
Now if you don't buy newer hardware that you don't really need you end up not being able to update your browser.
Are you talking about your Power PC 7200/75? That was 20 years ago and the binaries are totally different from Power PC vs Intel. Remember, Apple made a break from Power PC back around 2006. I update my browsers with no issues at all but my oldest Mac goes back only to 2006. I switched to Mac about the same time Apple adopted Intel processors.
Why does iPhone have to use a different cable when every other phone that uses micro USB?
Like the MagSafe power connector on the Mac, one of the best features of the Lightning connector with the iPhone is that it has no up or down orientation. You never fumble or struggle to plug it in especially when doing it blind w/o looking at the connector. You always have the Lightning connector orientation 100% correct. Micro-USB is 50/50 and you're invariably incorrect when in a hurry. On a related note, the industry finally wised up with it's new USB-C connector which all computer manufacturers will adopt, even Apple. Apple already has it on the new MacBook.
Also worth noting is the fact that unlike the older 30-pin iPhone connector, the Lightning connector has no analog line-out but instead has direct digital output. This not only bypasses the iPhone's internal DAC but it's analog output stage. This is a great feature for cars that are equipped with 'iPhone Integration'. This is much more than just a USB connector that you plug the iPhone into. For example, my iPhone connects digitally and directly to my car's DAC which is part of the audio / infotainment system for higher quality audio. No special drivers, software, or adapters necessary.
Regarding Apple computers: Same parts, they just charge more.
I would argue this point for a few reasons. First, Apple does not compete or intend to compete in the low-end commodity PC business. That's a proven losing business model. *
Second, in my opinion Macs are clearly better built than low-end plastic PCs. The PC laptops that do 'compete' with Mac laptops on quality materials and workmanship are priced the same or more for comparable configurations. And as you noted, you can also run Windows on a Mac laptop (or any recent Mac) so interestingly it can be argued that you get two platforms for the price of one. I run Windows and Mac OS X on my Macs all the time.
More on "same parts". Buying a computer to me is not about what the parts cost. I don't buy a car based on what the parts cost. I don't buy audio gear based on what the parts cost. It's about the whole experience which has to include the operating system, software, how well they are integrated for productivity, ease of use, and support. As a DOS and Windows user from day one of the PC, I can go on forever about why I switched to Mac, but I won't. ;-)
* Just this week respected tech research firm IDC reported that Apple's global (Mac) computer market share rose 16% in the 2nd quarter. Apple is the 4th largest maker of computers. The market share for the top three - Lenovo, HP, and Dell all fell.
We called it the mag unsafe. I can't tell you how man times I picked a staple or other metal crap out of there that the magnet sucked in, they didn't think that through. Hopefully the wallwart still worked.

Abe, I doubt we will ever find common ground but I will make an attempt. I was a huge Mac fan for a long time, I left them around the time you joined them. I had a 7200/75, an 8200/120, a G3 tower and a G3 ibook. I also had PCs for work. You see, I don't buy PCs, I build them. I have had modern Macs apart as well, they use the same parts. The RAM chips, the video cards, the processors, it is all the same parts I can buy to build a PC with. I can tell by your comments that you consider Apple "high end" and PCs "low end", 15 years ago that was true, they used better parts but now it's really marketing. I equate it to buying a nice 5k preamp only to take the cover off and find it's just a nice little NAD with the buttons moved to different places. Nothing wrong with a NAD but why not just get a NAD? I know OSX is different than windows, but it simply no longer has the advantages it once did.
My lady friend has a black Mac Book, it won't update Safari without updating the OS, she can't update the OS either because her MacBook is "no longer supported", yea it's not new, but why just stop supporting it? Microsoft didn't stop supporting updates to xp until just a couple years ago.
As for the cable, yes the non directional nature of it is nice, but I really don't have any issue with micro USB.
As for a tablet, I think they are redundant. What can a tablet really do that my HTC One M9 can't?
In the end, it is nice to have choices. :)
I can see your point about parts if building a PC but I would disagree when it comes to laptops. I don't know anyone who builds their own laptops. ;-)
I do equate Apple with "high-end" but in the PC market I see "low-end", "high-end" and everything in between.
The argument that PCs are cheaper is true because Apple does not compete in the "low-end" space. But if one were to compare comparably equipped PC laptops and Macs , the pricing difference soon disappears.
I'm talking mostly laptops here and even the iMac. Sure there are cheaper all-in-one PCs vs the iMac and cheaper laptops vs the MacBook series, but if you peel back the covers and compare what you get in parts, design innovation, materials and workmanship, you are not paying more for Apple.
Yes, it is good to have choice and in recent years I'm enjoying Mac more than I do the PC. We have a few of each platform in our home.
I have mixed feelings about tablets. My wife loves her iPad with optional keyboard that doubles as a cover. My iPad is used mostly as a remote control or for a few weather Apps including realtime weather RADAR and alerts so I can see storm tracks that are coming our way. I never travel with my iPad. I use my Mac laptop and iPhone for that.
Abe, I think we found a little common (tablets) ground after all :)
Apple laptops are beautiful, nicely styled and well made. Hardware wise, they do still cost more. For the cost of a MacBook Pro i5 with a 512gb ssd and 8 gigs of RAM I can get an Asus ROG model with the i7, 512gb ssd and 1tb 7200 rpm drive, 16 gigs of RAM with an NVIDIA GeForce 970m with 3 gigs of its own memory. Then I'd have 300 bucks leftover for a slick case and a Dragonfly :) Don't get me wrong, the MacBook Pro is a slick looking machine, it has the feel of a quality product. The geek in me couldn't say no to all that extra power though. I think an Apple is an easier buy, they and only they (now) make Macs, you always know what you are getting. PC laptops are made by so many companies, some (like the Asus) are really nice, some are not. As a consumer you need to do more research before choosing a PC, Apple let's you select from a menu of increased performance and price but you can be fairly sure the quality will be the same. I have enjoyed our conversation even though it ventured pretty far off topic :)
Tablets are not redundant. They are better than a desktop for reading. They are not as good as a desktop for writing, especially if multiple documents needed to be consulted while writing documents or performing design work. The sub $70 tablets make fine remote controls for home theater media players.

Hi, Tony
I can see your point about convenience, I just haven't ever had the need. Other than screen size there isn't any reason for me. I read on my HTC with no issue, I am using it to reply to this thread :) I can concede to the fact that if I got something like SimAudio's Mind streamer, I may use an iPad to control it. We have one around the house for her, it's a couple years old now but she uses it. None of my current gear has remote capability save for the DVD player I use as a transport. As for HT, that's a side interest for me and the only 2 sources I use in that system (PS3 and XBox) have controllers. As for writing, or any productive task, I agree desktops are better. I use dual monitors with one set up in portrait specifically for viewing documents while having the other monitor for web etc. I would not want to do a spread sheet on this HTC or the iPad, no thank you.
These devices can get out of hand. A woman came to a restaurant where I was dining at the bar. She had a smart phone, a tablet and a lap top. During the time she was there she wasn't very sociable, but she did use all three of her electronic devices. Apart from talking with the bartender to place orders, she hardly said a word to anyone in the room.

A youth-challenged guy, I am somewhat gadget-phobic, but I am going deaf. A company called StarkeyPro advertises hearing aids adjustable for, inter al., frequency-response and directionality. Seems ideal for, e.g., restaurant situations. But adjustment requires some sort of computer device (they mention iPhones, iPads, & the like). I wonder if my use of such devices would annoy others in a way similar to that in which others' use of cell phones at dinner annoys me.

Tony, I know what you mean. I see it all the time, at coffee shops everyone is buried in their device, in bars the same. Everyone seems hooked on "social media" but none seems to want to be social....
Typo,carom= CD rom
Stupid spell check on my Android phone..... :)
thanks for your two cents.
I remembered I had a PowerPC Powerbook and I could also install Linux on it with ctrl-c at boot-up.
now everything is proprietary, yes the bios too. it is no longer just a computer, it is an ecosystem
and to the other point Abe said, iOS isn't even open like android so I don't know what he's talking about.
Is Windows 'open' like Android?
no it is not.
I checked around there is something with the hardware on the ipad that I can't hack it to get android on it.
you are in the "cult of mac", I'm in the Linux Jihad.
lets leave it at that. I think your a fundamentalist apple fan, there is no changing your mind. on the other hand anything that doesn't work with Linux I want to be destroyed ;)
Why do you want Android on an iPad? Makes no sense. Just buy a cheap $35 Android tablet off Amazon.

I have problems with everything crashing all the time on the ipad.
I couldn't delete all the apple apps on it so I put them all in a folder, then I installed all google apps and they constantly crash.
I am not a fan of iOS, I want to be able to use android on my ipad, I don't like iOS I think it is a piece of shit operating system.
I got the ipad as a gift, that's the only tablet I have. I'll maybe look into an android tablet and sell the ipad.
Of all the Apps my wife and I have on our iPads there are only a couple that crash and that's mostly the fault of the App developer.
How old is your iPad? Which iOS are you running?
I am looking at it,the box says it is an iPad mini wi-fi 64gb space gray
version 8.3 it says, I see 8.4 is available I am upgrading to that now this morning.

That's a current iPad model. If you're feeling adventurous, you can load the iOS 9 public beta just released July 9th.
I just gave the ipad mini away and got a Samsung Galaxy Tab A.
I'm charging it up, then I'll setup encryption. thanks for the chat.
Hmm, that was quick. Between the wee hours of the early A.M. while we were posting and now, you managed to give away the iPad, went to a store and bought another tablet? Enjoy.
I'm on the east coast, went out around 10am, gave the ipad to a family member. I slept at 8pm last night, woke up around 2am, been up ever since.I think it was around 3am or 4am my time during our posting marathon.

did you get a micro OTG adapter so you can attach USB devices to it? Amazon has them.
