I decided to see if this "Oldie"(I had shelved from my active components)
could still be relevant in terms of what I'm using in my current listening
setup . It is actually a pretty solid performer !
I wasn't too sure about how much it would impress me 2 day ago when I first reconnected it with a set of High Fidelity Cables CT-1 interconnects to my slightly tweaked Burson Soloist HP Amp . Tonally it sounded right but it sounded a bit "closed in",that's changed nicely at the current time. The thing that's surprised quite a bit is how good a few of the early Sony DSD Single Layer SACDs sound. (I like being able to play these "non-rippable"discs again). This brings me to one of the reasons I'm posting today; disc recognition.
I've never (cross my toes, throw the cat out the window) had much trouble with this issue w/this player, but I did come across a fairly recent Hybrid
"Surround Sound" SACD that the player will only recognize the CD layer of Strangely enough there is no mention of there being a Stereo SACD layer on the disc & the DSD icon doesn't light up on the player. I'm hoping it's these circumstances that are in play for this particular SACD. Long story / short I came across a few threads that mention calibrating the disc drive may solve / prevent the disc problems ! I came across a posting talking about a Service CDROM that was used for calibrating the drive.
Can anyone confirm this,or at least point me in the direction to find this
CDROM ? Thanks !

I think you have to tell it to play SCAD with the remote. Do you have the remote?

Wow,thanks for all the interest guys !!!
Being somewhat of a "Worry Wort" I don't really seem to have the dreaded
disc recognition problem...yet! I seem to have an unusual Hybrid SACD that
for some reason may not even be DSD as I can't find anything on the disc
or the SACD case indicating this or (Which may be why I can find that Multich/Stereo icon either). For the time being I'm hoping it was a "One
& done" occurrence (But I downloaded the Service Manual & will be opening
this baby up to make sure the transport pillars are nice & snug)
When I had originally picked up this player my system building knowledge
wasn't anywhere near to where I think it is now ! This is a pretty nice
component. Being only a 2nd generation ES SACD player it has a lot of
that nice solidity that doesn't seem to exist in many modern disc players. I honestly didn't expect it to still sound "Relevant" anymore so
I'm still a little surprised that I like it ! (& I really haven't
had much of a chance to "play around" with it...yet!
I'll let everyone know whether it's worth the time to tweak it. It looks
slightly promising (the truth is we just like messing with this stuff)
This player was a real winner for Sony upon release, as it captured both, audiophile (CD/SACD) and videophile (DVD) fans for $1500-
Another thought- Old Steve A-
you could contact Sony Repair in Laredo TX and ask about the laser calibration/resetting.
Thanks! for sharing- Old Steve A.
I,too, have been thinking about picking up one these spinners as well.
How do you like the SACD playback?
And yes, these Sony ES players really benefit from excellent to outstanding cables/power cords. In a previous system, I had a $500 IC from the pre-amp to the cd player, an old Sony 520 ES II model, that I bought for $20.00 -
If you have not already done so, try searching the archives on Hi-Rez forum. I seem to remember that a lot of info on sled recalibration, etc.., had been discussed over there in not-too-distant the past and it's possible that someone over there has the required CD-Rom for you to borrow or buy.

Thanks, will do.
Hopefully, it's an easy find . I'm pretty stoked at how good DSD sounds
through this player (Heh,he,he...even if the interconnects I have on it
cost slightly more than what this player cost new !)(Finally some SACD
sound that's comparable to how PCM sounds through my Metrum Hex !)
Eventually got rid of it, but not because of inferior sound or because I experienced problems with it. It's just part of the digital merry-go-round I guess. The sonic character of the player leaned a bit towards the airy and cool side of neutral (the Sony "house sound"?). Soundstaging was one of it's major strong points. If I remember correctly, the "slow" filter setting accessible via remote options did seem to warm the sound up just a bit. Back in it's day, I believe that it was considered to be a slightly better SACD player than a player of CDs.
It sounded good and was built like a tank but, as with so many players that used Sony transport mechanisms, there was a common failure point. I eventually gravitated toward top-loading CD players because of this. I'm now using up or modding all of the old Sony Playstation Ones I can find (before old age deteriorates them any further) for headphone listening - not the last word in sonic detail retrieval but one of the least fatiguing CD players around.
