If the player doesn't have a volume control, you need a passive attenuator e.g. http://www.tcelectronic.com/level-pilot/
My experience is that you gain a bit transparency because you eliminate a whole box of electronic components but are a bit down in power as pre-amps in general offer more than unity gain.

It does have a volume control. It is an Esoteric K-07. It is on its way, I just wanted to get some opinions about the idea.
Great looks like its a great product....works as a Dac 'digital inputs', a preamp 'volume control' and a CDP.
You should also be able to use it as a Dac for your computer audio music via a USB/SPDIF converter.
