Perhaps, most likely, I'm not quite in the correct forum but I need some information. I want to ditch my Time-Warner modem which deals with my internet, TV, and phone service. Is there a replacement modem available on the retail market that will do the trick?
Follow Ups:
I ended up buying a Netgear C3000 modem/router for about $91, plus tax, and dropping the TWC phone service. My new agreement retains a 50 Mbps speed, the second tier of channels for this area- most of which I don't bother watching, the HD DVR box, and a small converter for the bedroom TV. The cost is supposed to be just under $100/mo, still a bit pricey but other than going to a dish service, there is no other competition.
We just got our 3G cell phones from CREDO but since we were never glued to the land line, we should be able to eventually adjust over time.
Getting the modem end of the new box functioning wasn't as excruciating as I expected but I must be missing something on the setup of the router function. There's supposed to be a simplified installation wizard but I must have missed it. No CD-ROM came with the unit so I guess I'll be at the mercy of the call in tech support staff and the volume of calls they're facing when I make my plea for help.
We have a central panel in the basement to distribute phone, ethernet and cable connections for the whole house. I just bought a cable modem, Cisco, which is what Cox uses and TW supports. Then I added a TP-Link gigibit router ( TL-R600VPN, $70) and connected a separate WiFi router to the wired ethernet in a central location in the house where it would work well.
Cox and TW will provide the telephone box for free, they only charge for the modem/router.
You can buy a combined modem/router, but they are a lot more expensive and typically only support 100Mbps versus gigibit.

Does your Time Warner cable modem have Wifi, Ethernet Ports, and Phone jacks in back? What level of service do you have? While there are several Cable Modems that will work for basic internet, the choices become much narrower if your cable modem includes all the features listed above. Check with Time Warner. See the link below.I'm on Comcast (Xfinity) internet, TV, phone. Our Cable Modem has Wifi, 4 RJ45 1-Gigabit Ethernet ports, 2 RJ11 Phone Ports, and an internal battery backup. I use every port. If I purchased this cable modem retail it would cost me about $200. We just rent ours from Comcast for $10/mo and they upgrade the cable modem whenever there are features or performance improvements that warrant it. We're on our 3rd cable modem in 5 years and each has been an improvement.

The further I look into it, the more dismaying it becomes. I have cable TV, internet, and telephone services from TWC. I've found plenty of modem/router setups for reasonable prices but nothing that will handle the telephone as well.
I was ready to spend some money on a modem to stop sending TWC the monthly fee and do a bit of Wi-Fi for Mrs PG's Kindle but so far it looks like I'll just end up with adding a router unless I can find that Swiss Army Knife type modem.
Keep us posted - Postal Grunt.
I have my internet and phone service through TWC and recently sought to replace the TWC modem with my own and save the rental fee. I found a telephony modem listed on their website and purchased it off of ebay. When I called them to install it I was told that I had to keep the TWC modem for the telephone service but there would be no monthly charge for it. So now I have two cable modems and no rental fee.
