I cannot stand the sound of budget CD players unless they are NOS. Only a NOS/multibit/ladder DAC sounds right to me. The difference is fairly obvious to me.
I may have heard a Macintosh CD player that was delta-sigma and managed to make great music. I don't know whether that feeling would have held up for hours or not, though.
I believe that most people who believe that they prefer delta-sigma have not heard the multibit type. I cannot imagine how someone could prefer delta-sigma unless something is wrong with their system.
The ultimate test is whether the sound gets you to listen to whole CDs or more.

Then I got a deal on the Octave mk I like linked below.
There is the Nixon stuff which I have not heard.
Then the MHDT stuff is > $1k.
But only Metrum is using new DAC chips for <$2k. And now Schiit maybe for $2300.
