AS you can see below opinions are all over the place on this subject. It is difficult to recommend to you what to buy without knowing what you reference is. I will tell you my setup which many people have heard and like a lot. I do digital in several ways. I play CD's on an Audio Note transport into a Metrum Hex dac connected with a CT-1 digital cable. I also have a Lenova laptop which I use in 2 different ways. One way is I have JRiver 19 which I use to rip CD's and play using a lightspeed 10g USB cable to the Metrum Hex Dac. I also us laptop which is connected via WiFi to my main computer and stream Tidal to the Metrum Hex. All this options sound excellent.
Prices of this equipment is as follows
Laptop $450
Transport $3000
Metrum Hex Dac $3500
An example of the price of one of the best reviewed dacs is the
Berkeley Reference which is $17000
You also need for the rest of your system to be very good if you expect
good sound
At this years CES there was a great digital system based on the Berkely reference dac with solution electronics and Magico speakers. This system was streaming Digital from a storage device and was thrilling to listen to
Price tag was about $550,000
You would be very happy with this system listening to digital

... I think it's wrong to imply that a digital front-end needs to be quite so expensive, i.e. a $3000 transport or $3500 DAC.
Personally I almost never listen to my CD player anymore; I rip everything to computer files before I listen via my modest desktop Win 7 machine.
BTW, I use dBpoweramp Ripper to rip, Tag&Rename to complete/correct metadata, and Foobar2000 as my music player.
I love the music of Dmitri Shostakovich
I did not really mean to imply that you have to spend a lot of money for good digital. I also have a Teradak Chamellion which sounds really nice and is only $500. I was just trying to respond the posters wanting digital sound that would knock him out. I have played around with some of the Schitt stuff and they have products at very low prices yet present a very good listening experience. What is nice about Hi End Audio today is most of the equipment out there provides a satisfying listening experience for the majority of listeners

OK, so, if I get a PS Audio Directstream or a Marantz - NA-11S1 Reference DSD DAC, I can hook up my computer to it and stream downloaded music OR ripped CDs? Correct? I can then add a laptop or mac to use as a server, but it is not necessary? Right? I can then add a CD player without a dac to it if I wanted in the future? Will I need a device between the computer and dac to decrease jitter (forgot what it is called)? Thank you again.
You are correct. Buy the way all CD players have a dac on board but you can use most cd players as a transport and hook them up to your dac. The laptop is not necessary as long as your main computer is in the same room as the rest of your system. As for a device to reduse jitter there are dozens of them. The current hot device is the ReGen from Uptone audio. It is just $175 and everybody says it improves the sound of digital audio
Good luck
Alan
