I have been watching to see what suggestions might be made as far as new CD players lately; in particular inmate "Demo", who hasn't seemed to get any replies...
I have a similar story with my player and wonder if it is time to cast fate to the wind or just get into a music server-style thing.
My current player (a NAD C542, which about 10 years old now) has started to do some funky stuff. Lately, it may play fine a whole disc through without issue; other times (like yesterday as D-Wife reported to me), it stopped mid-play and would not go to any other track. She ejected the disc and noted that it was spinning out as the door opening (yikes!).
Is that a symptom of the guide rails needing new lube? Is it the laser getting ready to give up the ghost?
If I were to get a new player, I might consider an all in one option, like an Oppo 103 or similer, as I have a bunch of DVD-A discs and maybe two or three SACD/CD hybrids, and a pile of DVD-V discs (haven't jumped at Blu-ray yet).
Thoughts, comments or tomatoes are welcome.
Cheers,

Buying a dedicated CD player probably doesn't make too much sense these days if you have a separate DAC. If you have a separate DAC, the Oppo 103 is surprisingly good - even without additional "tricks" like reclocking. I use this player as a Network Streamer as well. You don't need to use it with a display if you have an Android or iOS device - apps are available which enable you to control the player and browse files on the disc or network.
However, if you need a "complete solution" the Oppo 105 is probably the better route to go.

If I were building a home entertainment center, I would build it around one of those OPPO Blu-ray players.
However, for a music center, I'm not entirely sure. My old player just does not sound good to my ears, even as a transport. I am getting much superior results via USB to a DAC. Now, if I can just figure out how to eliminate the distraction of a computer, I would be set.
it is a sickness that I cannot bear anymore. It is worse with tablets, if you don't have a tablet computer yet don't get one. Also smart phones with the internet all day long, it is very very strong, not an addiction but a yearning for learning and information. I tried to read a book today, lasted about 20 minutes until I felt I was being tortured by the linerality. I believe the mind has been reorganized to think in pieces, this is a hellish insanity that seems to have no end.

"... only a very few individuals understand as yet that personal salvation is a contradiction in terms."
Or not ... depends on the player and the system.
In my recent upgrade to my digital front end, taking note of similar views here, I first tried a computer solution of laptop, Exact Audio Copy and Jriver, with a Luxman DA06 dac via USB.
Results were nothing special, even with high res downloads (and my system is high resolution, high quality).
After some more messing around with a dedicated transport and its matching dac, I have ended up with a 'so yesteryear' Accuphase DP-510 one box CD player which is simply superb. CDs on this are *far* better sounding than even high res files via the computer and dac. I'll be staying with a disc spinner (still considering the DP-720 SACD/CD player). And I'm very much staying with even more yesteryear vinyl :-)
Of course all this is subjective, and I may not have got the best of results from computer audio, so YMMV and I respect this; but the above is what I personally found.
Some spinners must be really good and I have nothing against them as I was merrily going that route as well until I ran into the road block of my existing player, a SONY XA7-ES, not really being to my liking sonically any more, not even as a transport.
I am caught in the no man's land of struggling with computer audio. Nothing wrong with it actually, but certainly another learning curve.
at different levels....
SoTM SMS100 $545
Squeezebox Touch $500 to whatever used... with Teradak PSU $150
Auralic Aries, $900 or $1400
Bryston BDP2 $2500
Sonore Rendu & Rendu Signature. $2.5K
Auralic Aries Mini...
Sim Audio Mind $1100
Most of these are cheaper than any computer and its required USB adapters and cables, and the "mods" that you have to do to fix the noise of the computer, or optimize and limit non-audio apps from interfering...

Accuphase may very well build the best spinners to date!

look into a NAD 565BEE cd player.
I've been using an Oppo BDP-105D for more than a year and I'm pretty happy. The Oppo does everything digital and it does it very well. It has become the heart of my audio/video entertainment system .
Good luck,

I have an Oppo 103 used primarily for video duty, but moved to a server based solution for playing music across multiple systems (via a single digital library) a couple of years ago. I cannot imagine having to return to retrieving and putting away shiny disks every time I play music.
Get a streamer and rip your CDs.
Yes rip your cd's get a nice DAC, a laptop and a tablette and here you go, in my case the sound is much superior to my Sony 5400 ES VSE
easier to use, I am in audio heaven.

Curious, do you feel the same way with those shiny black disks on a turntable?
Largely, yes. But then there is no alternative for achieving the same audio quality.
While I maintain two turntables, I find myself playing either rather infrequently.
