In Reply to: RE: what's better for digital signal? SPDIF or Optical? posted by bullethead on May 16, 2015 at 03:39:11
An obvious one is that in both cases you send SPDIF to the DAC
Optical:
- perfect galvanic isolation
- the standard says 24/96 max but often modern hardware performs better
Coax
- no galvanic isolation
- 24/192 or higher depending on the implementation.
Coax can be better in the jitter department but this of course depends on the implementation.
Only a listening test can tell you how they sound in your specific system

ok thank you for the information. I'm going to stick to optical.
Like the above poster said it depends on a few things. You owe it to yourself to try both and see what sounds best to you with your gear.

i hooked an Audioquest VDM-5 SPDIF cable. It seems to smooth out the bass, more listenable to me compared to optical. With this particular source. I will play with this for awhile.
Thanks to all for the help.
And not to add any chaos but of course different cables sound.......wait for it.......different.

my source power chord costs over $1k, call me nuts.
If I had more money I'd try higher doolar power cords than my $750 ones (retail) that I paid half of that for.

also outlet upgrades make a difference.
I had both hooked to Sony XA7 CD Player as Transport, Built-in PCM Dac on McIntosh C2500 Tube Preamp/Dac, into separate inputs.
It was easy to hear that the SPDIF sounded better, more body and presence.
i notice that too. Thanks for your observation, I noticed sound is smoother, more listenable.
