I find it interesting, the pursuit of the ultimate DAC or transport. Many of us have very little understanding of how digital sound is generated and really see these sound devices as a "black box."
CD had something to offer to the consumer, but the more demanding listeners among us sensed that something was missing. The (16/44) format was/is technically unable to fill that void. Although vendors have promised time and time again that they could. The ever hopeful and loyal consumer continues to buy into the next gimmick. DIY artists endlessly are trying to get their players to capture that "analog warmth." It's not there and never will be.
If you think that a small percentage of players really make music, then I say that the technology is fundamentally flawed.
There is an interesting phenomenon that has been generated by the misconceptions and unreasonable expectations brought about by digital media and the audiophoolery that has ensued since CD's came to market. I don't think there was any precedent for it in the pre-digital era.
So everyone is highly invested in this red book albatross and just don't want to let go.
Follow Ups:
The wackiest part of the "CD journey" was discovering the Philips CDC-935 CD changer.... Prior to experiencing this unit with the output stage replaced by a good tube stage, I would have thought this was just another crappy consumer-grade CD playback product.... One amongst thousands.... But when the output stage was cleaned up with that tube output stage, hiding inside its indistinguished "CD changer" case was one of the best sounding DACs I've ever come across. The 935 changer with tube output stage had become my reference. Five years straight.
Sure I've heard better (Prism DA-2, Wadia 9, etc.), but nothing inexpensive comes close to this particular unit.
I've tried the tube output as well and in my opinion it can really help. Various tweeks that I have tried worked for a period of time, but I always and inevitably had to jump ship. Now, my old rec-o-kut idler that I have been using for about 7 years, I just don't have any desire to change. It's musical, reliable, and beautifully simple. Are there better turntables? Yes, I'm sure there are, but I have no need to switch to anything else. It just works and doesn't leave me wanting. I also think it has much to do with the inherent rightness of analog. Never felt that way about digital or any digital source.
