I've been a vinyl skeptic ever since CD's first came out, so perhaps it's no surprise that I'm surprised at all the assertions I read in this thread indicating that LP's can last forever. I remember many, many years ago, Stereo Review published electron microscope photos of pristine, unplayed grooves vs. the same grooves after just one play, and the amount of groove deformation was amazing! I know cartridges and the associated playback apparatus must have improved since the days of that publication, but I've never seen similar recent photos based on similar tests.
I would love to see this kind of update, because, despite my trust in the assurances of my good friends on this thread who love vinyl (!), seeing is believing! ;-)

And before one claims that this view champions the claims of file-based reproduction, think about what files are stored on and how they're played back.
Why are we looking for 'physical infinity' in music reproduction media or systems? And if we're not, then surely one's choice of medium is a subjectively driven rather than objectively-derived?

And for me, vinyl is WAY below the threshold. Sure, it's subjectively driven, but with objective correlations, no single one of which tells us the complete story. That's why we get into these stupid religious debates.
Generally, I try to focus on the music, and ignore the medium. That said, I just have not been able to muster any interest in adding layers of IT to my listening experience at home in order to add file-based pathways. It may happen. But so far resistance is not proving futile.
