"I've played some vinyl tracks hundreds of times without any audible degradation."
I recall this being demonstrated at an audio store roughly 15 years ago.... Two sealed copies of the same album were shown to the patrons, the store salesman opened one of the copies, put an "X" on the center label, and then placed it on a fully automatic turntable with the "repeat" mode turned on. He left the turntable running that vinyl side repeatedly overnight.
The next day, most of the patrons returned, the vinyl still playing on the turntable. He then opened the other copy, and played it side by side with the first copy, none of the patrons noticed a real difference between the two copies, save for one who thought the played copy was "slightly noisier" between tracks. But nobody could guess reliably which copy was playing.

That was pretty harsh, as the constant playing was pretty hard on the LP. A bad stylus and actually too low a tracking can destroy LPs. What Tony said is 100% true. With proper care and equipment LPs will last just about forever.

Agreed....
I don't remember the cartridge used in the experiment. But it apparently tracked the grooves well enough (over a day's time) to where no noticeable degradation took place.
I also remember auditioning gear at another audio store.... I brought an LP, and it was damaged badly after just one play. The cartridge was a Shinon Red. Supposedly a really high-end product at the time. (I still have that LP, Supertramp "Crime of the Century".)
