Since adding a Rotel RC- 1570 preamp to my tube system a few months ago, which has a Dac built in, I have been looking around for a basic streamer to add, so I could stream some Jazz.
So on my usual stroll through Best Buy today on my day off, I noticed a little Sony on the open box table and the words Ultimate Streamer caught my eye. On further notice I saw it was a Blu-Ray player. BDP S5200. there was also a BDP S3200, they both looked the same, not sure what the difference was, but for $20 more I took the 5200. Total price $74.00.
Its very basic, which suits me fine, no analog out, so I guess no Dac. No display, so I used a old Dell monitor I had in the closet. Just HDMI and coax output, and the coax is not even gold plated.
Easy hook up and setup, and I had it streaming into the Rotel in no time. Sounds great, although nothings really burnt in yet, not even the DAC in the Rotel. I bought it for the streaming, but after listening for about a hour I decided to see what a CD would sound like compared to my reliable old Denon, which I have been using as a transport going into the Rotel since I got it.
Well, I was pleasantly surprised, its just as nice if not better. A little more open and dynamic.
So sometimes you never know what turns up if you just be patient. Now I have one more option in that system when there is nothing good on the tuner and I am too lazy to even put in a CD much less play a LP.

Hi ... i think that if you look around you should find also some nice app to remote control your BR player from a smart phone/tablet.
There is one official from Sony and others not official.
I have to have one of this players.
I remember some years ago there were more "giant killers" hunters around.
I remember the small ART DI/O dac period for instance ... nice times.
Thanks again.
Kind regards,

Back in the early DAC days, there was more hunters for the giant killer as you say. I guess back then there was less choices and all the really good ones were so expensive.

Hi and you are quite right
But i remember that little dac being part of a system Best sound of the show at a CES (do not remember the year)
The transport was an exceptional and expensive Krell MD something providing i guess an excellent digital signal.
The speakers were very revealing as well.
I would like to listen to that dac now. I am sure it would be still fine.
Thanks again.
Kind regards,

I think the difference between the 32/52 is just 3D. Upper models include 4K scaling ...
nice little review.
Hi and thanks a lot for the suggestion.
It would be nice a shootout with some other streamers.
This has the video option as well.
Or some measurements on the spdif out of the Sony.
I will look for one and listen.
The only think i do not like is the case shape.
Thanks again.

space ship. As for the video, I have not tried that yet and did not intend to, but the reviews I have been reading all rave about the picture.
So I may be tempted to compare it to my Oppo 105 in the HT system.

Hi and yes that would be nice.
I had the feeling that some BR players can be very good streamers, but i am lost in the huge choice of models. It is like a treasure hunt.
Please report any finding.
Thanks again.
Kind regards,

Love the Sansui tuner. It brigs back memories!

That's what it does for me also. I had a brand new one with the matching amp back in the seventies as a teenager. Use to lay in bed at night just looking at the lights when FM was king.

Those days when you could turn on the radio, get great music and not have to turn the dial, are long gone.

Nice system- AB.
