So is the disc properly seated where it is supposed to be? This is usually the cause of binding. Which pic represents what you see? Can you see the black disc tray as in the top photo? This would allow one to reseat the disc properly where as the bottom pic requires one to remove some screws.
If you can see the disc and you did seat it and it still binds the loading motor may have issues but the circular gear from its motor shaft could have bound and simply turning it by hand may free it up. Good luck.

Thanks for sharing in case mine acts up! It still hangs up occasionally even if the CD is properly seated. I wonder if it's due to static electricity?

probably not. Moving parts are the most likely thing to fail in things. See if hi-fi engine has the service manual and maybe there are lube points. I have seen plastic gears crack and cause irregular behavior.

Awe-d-o-file thank you very much for the reply. The top picture looks like my CDP. Sorry but I am not sure what you mean by reseating the disc? A friend of mine and I took a look at the transport and could not find anything obvious but if you could inform me how to reseat or turn the gear if its bound then I will give this a shot.
OK the top one. You can see the disc then too right? I assumed a disc was in the player. Is there? If not and the loading motor is binding you'll have to find that motor. CDP's have three motors usually. One to load the tray, one to spin the disc and one to move the laser across as it plays. The loading motor is usually on one side or the other and at the back of the CD mech. When you find it manually turn the motor and you should be able to cycle through and get the door to open. I really can't say more than that.
