As the title says, my venerable Sony CDR-W33 cd recorder just died. For a number of reasons, I still need, from time to time, to make very high quality copies of cd's that I own. Most often, I do this when traveling, and also in relation to my car, which has no even remotely easy, affordable or acceptable way to add an iPod, or alternative. So I'm stuck with it's cd changer.
And so, I need to replace the existing unit with another one. The only currently available model that isn't $800-1000.00 and intended for pro usage, is this Tascam:
TASCAM CD-RW900MKII | Sweetwater.com
Does anyone have any experience with this unit? My old Sony made flawless copies, and that is what I'm after. The CDR-w33's do pop up on Amazon from time to time, as well as some other brands and models of older units, but many of them were from produced 2000-2005, and they are clearly getting up there in years, and continued reliability could be questionable.
Any suggestions, expertise, or recommendations are appreciated. Thanks.

spending that kind of money to rip/burn a cd. I'm with Carcass. Get the LG for $40. The LG is built well with a solid drawer. I get speeds up to 33 depending on the cd. Using DbPoweramp as your software will get you confident rips.

The only reason to spend that much money on copying cd's is if you are making a huge amount of copies.
Maybe I missed something, but why not just use a laptop to copy them??
If you absolutely must have a CD-R deck, musicians friend and sweetwater have a dozen models or so to choose from.
My earlier version of this model is still making superb copies after 12 years.
... the replacement (linked below) will cost you about $40 - or $30, if you're lucky to catch it on sale at BestBuy or other store like it.
Combine that with free CD ripping/burning software - and you're all set.
Hard to beat that deal and you're not out much if it doesn't work. But it will...

I'm not certain that these are suitable replacements for you so you might want to do further in-depth research. Linked below are few CD recorders in the sub $500 range on Amazon. Good luck!

if you enjoyed the Sony buy another.
If you simply wish to copy CDs, I recommend a Teac CDW-D11 duplicator. Built like a tank and makes great copies. You can pick one up used for about $100-$125 on ebay.
If you absolutely have to have a CD recorder, the TASCAM is probably the best bang-for-the-buck. It would also be best to buy a new one so you don't run into the same problem you are having now. The other option is to download Exact Audio Copy (EAC) from the internet and copy your CDs to your computer. You can burn CD-R copies from your computer, too. I load the files onto USB flash drives for playback in my Oppo BDP-105D, but you can burn CD-Rs if you absolutely have to.
Good luck,
John Elison
