The MSB would certainly be outclassed by today's digital. I had the MSB Link III with the "Half Nelson" upgrade and Channel Islands upgraded power supply. But when I obtained a Benchmark Dac1 in 2004 or so, it was so far superior to the MSB that I put the MSB up for sale the next day. And the Benchmark DAC1 is outclassed by later digital, e.g., the Benchmark DAC2 HGC that I now have.
Follow Ups:
I too compared the original Benchmark DAC (then the "flavor of the month") with my heavily modified MSB Link III. The result? I found that the Benchmark in my system was clinical-sounding and not as satisfying as the MSB in the mid-bass region. Benchmark claimed its product was more accurate, but I couldn't get used to it.
As always, trust your ears. You cannot accurately evaluate gear in isolation, since your goal is system synergy.
Thanks for sharing - it seems like the Benchmark was a substantially more sophisticated piece of equipment (pricier for sure).
I have tried a Musical Fidelity VDAC 2 back in 2008, and it was awful compared to MSB.. mostly because it was an upsampling machine I guess. The MSB I have was 299, and I added a Upsampling card to it for 100. MSB advised to not use the card to upsample, but just to re-clock.
I would like to find a newer dac with the msb price tag ($250-400), with usb input just in case I start to use a pc as input.
