In Reply to: RE: OPPO 105 - need to format SSD - but which format? posted by stehno on February 03, 2015 at 00:40:36
Use your Mac's Disk Utility to partition/format the SSD using the MS-DOS (FAT) filesystem and see if the Oppo will recognize it. The Mac will be able to read and write to it.Or with a bit more effort you can make your Mac able to Write to a NTFS filesystem. Link below. However, I would try using MS-DOS FAT first as described above and shown in the screen shot example below.

Partitioning my 240GB SSD into 3 80GB partitions helped. But it still loses its way after maybe 1 or 2 songs. Can have pauses upwards of 60 - 90 seconds or more.
I think it may be specific to the SSD drive.
But I'm now looking into a few other alternatives at the moment.
EDIT: I had another thought. Not being familiar with your SSD or the USB port on the Oppo raises a couple more questions:- What SSD is it? What type of enclosure is the SSD housed in and is there a USB 2 or USB 3 connection on the enclosure?
- What happens if you get a USB Y cable and supply extra power to the SSD? The thought being, there might be sufficient power from your USB port for the thumb drive but it might be marginal for powering the SSD. Although, SSDs do not draw a whole lot of power. Just a thought.
--------------
If I'm not mistaken your goal was to Read & Write files & folders to the SSD using the Mac.
Is that working?
AND the SSD has to be compatible with the Oppo.
Is the Oppo able to play music from the SSD?
If you are experiencing drop-outs or long pauses in audio it is most likely not the newly partitioned & formatted SSD but I have not read the Oppo manual and do not know it's specific disk & file requirements.
Have you tried a standard USB non-SSD hard drive?
I would be surprised if the Oppo cannot read a MS-DOS FAT formatted disk... the Mac can.
If the Oppo is more inclined to read SD cards and USB sticks then formatting the SSD using ExFAT might be an another option that jusbe mentioned in this thread. Again, you can use the Mac's built-in Disk Utility.

Thanks for your input, Abe.
Tonight I tried the EXT-FAT (last night the DOS-FAT) and single partition. I heard 5 seconds of music before hanging for minutes and I finally gave up waiting.
So you have no problems with your Samsung 512GB SSD?
My SSD is a 3 year old OCZ. OCZ turned out to be a questionable performer as far as SSD's go. So perhaps a better quality and slightly better energy efficiency SSD would do the trick.
Thanks for your help.
- I have no problems with my Samsung 512GB SSD but I'm not using it with an Oppo.- Can you now reliably read / write to your SSD with no issues? Does it stall or stutter under normal use, like it does when attached to your Oppo?
- Have you tried a basic 2.5" portable USB (non-SSD) disk drive instead on the Oppo?
- Have you considered contacting Oppo support? Perhaps there's newer firmware than what's on your unit. Is it updated with the latest firmware?
According to this guy on YouTube his external USB drive works just fine on his Oppo

Thanks for digging up that video, Abe.
No issues with the SSD elsewhere as I recently took it out of my other macbook pro and reformatted and downloaded my music to it using USB cable and port.
Just tried a 10 year old 200GB external HDD plugged into the OPPO and works fine.
So I suspect as you do that perhaps this particular SSD is lacking just enough juice to fly right.
I'd love to have the SSD hooked up to my router (rather than the OPPO) and play from there. However, it seems my 4 year old Netgear router has issues supporting that USB port.
So I could try the Y USB cable that you suggested, get another SSD, or get a new router with a working USB port.
Thanks for your time investment.
Thanks for your note.
So that's a use for the Y USB cable, eh?
My intent for music is to simply use the 240GB SSD just as I have flawlessly been using my 128GB thumb drive at the OPPO.
Of course when I want to add music I'd like to attach the SSD to my macbook pro to do so.
From my listening room using my iPad and OPPO app I've had no difficulty connecting to my son's computer in his room about 40 ft. away and on another floor, locate his iTunes folder and play his music on the OPPO.
Pretty cool. But if I can do that why the hangup on simply attaching an SSD locally to the OPPO?
This evening I upgraded my Netgear router's firmware, reformatted the SSD to EXT FAT (1 partition), reloaded the music onto the SSD, and am now attempting to plug the SSD into my router's USB port. Since I can play music from my son's computer on the OPPO, why not try likewise with the SSD in a remote room?
At the same time, I'll try connecting the SSD with the new EXT FAT format and single partition once more directly to the OPPO to see if that works.
Kind of a pain, but if either option works, I'll be in hog heaven.
Thanks for the help.
If this works, even better.
Thanks, Abe. That worked.
Well, sort of. It's very flaky playing on the OPPO.
The most it played before hanging is 30 seconds of music.
I've rebooted the OPPO and replugged in the 240GB SSD several times and thus far that's the best I can do.
I see you've got a 512GB SSD with just one 512GB partition. Have you experienced any issues there?
I'm trying now 3 80GB partitions to see if that might tidy things up a bit.
If this doesn't work, I'll try formatting the disk using NTFS and 3 partitions formatted with MS DOS FAT.
Until now I've been using a 128GB Thumb drive without issue.
I love all the OPPO does, but it's OS can be a bit flaky at times.
Thanks,
