In Reply to: RE: Is there such thing as (digital) source selection and volume control in the digital domain? posted by Serge_S on January 26, 2015 at 15:33:55
I have a NAD M51 and it's digital volume is one of the best I've ever used. NAD claims truncation is only done below -66dB. My current preamp is analog without remote so the NAD's remote volume and HDMI inputs were a big factor in choosing it. It sounded great and I could not tell any difference between fixed and variable output.

Have you tried M51 going straight into your amp? What were the results? Thanks
Honestly I haven't.... I tried a previous DAC direct and did not care for it at all. The reason I got a DAC with variable out in the first place is because my preamp is not remote control. I'm using a Conrad Johnson Classic 2 SE driving a pair of Quicksilver Mid Monos and they sound great together. I have several analog sources as well so that kind of rules out direct connection in my set up but I wouldn't discourage trying it in a system with all digital sources.
