I have seen the same about the Mac, Marantz, etc. and the prices they take in. That all started in the late '80's to early '90's. The Asian market drove up the prices to ridiculous levels because they couldn't buy this stuff in their country. It would get bought, shipped back, never to be seen again. Until just this last 10 years or so when the Asians copied our circuits(like they did our cars) and built them as good if not better for less money. They were very smart when it came to buying and selling. And! They paid all cash.
As for that stuff better than todays. I'm doubtful but you get these people that do this and that to a vintage item and say it sounds awesome and they create a following. It's called a funny word! Marketing! I'm sure we have better parts today than was made umteen years back but as for it sounding night and day better? You'd have to prove a lot to get me to believe.
Krell is another heavy Asian thing. They love that stuff. Mark Levinson, Goldmund, Jeff Rowland, etc. They used to pay much more than market here because it wasn't available there. That's how this stuff got out of hand.
I am sure your Krell is of the same quality as the ones made today. And in some ways might be better. Today it's all about costs to build as it always was but today there are compromises to get the cost as low as possible and the quality is compromised. With that in mind, keep what you have. It's probably just fine.

Ohm speaker aren't really that expensive. I was just looking at their website. There's a pair of Walsh Tall wT-4000 on sale for $3995.
I bought a pair of Thiel CS3.7 speakers two years ago, which retailed at that time for $14,700 a pair. The Walsh Tall/Ohm speakers are the same size. Check them out at the link below.
