The folks behind Schiit Audio aren't newbies. Just reflect on the reviews Theta used to get. Knowing that and a bit about modern DAC design imperatives might lead you to consider that digital technology today is advancing in several directions at once, and rapidly.
For sure, the lower end models from Schiit are more basic/good-value, but forthcoming models, such as the Yggdrasil, are ones to watch, I predict.

Follow Ups:
why these advances might mitigate or eliminate the need for great power supplies, high quality wire, less variance in the spec of resistors, caps, DAC chips etc? Quality, (and expensive), quantity, of DAC chips, RFI mitigation, inert cases? Quality connectors? and more?

The more wide-spread use of FGPAs and DSP chips are but two. Power supplies, well specified, have been at the forefront of good design forever. SPDIF-free protocols are another. I guess I am less inclined to adhere to the audio hierarchies of 'old', especially in the digital realm!Have a look at (admittedly) limited detail around the forthcoming Yggdrasil. Many of the features appear to be updates of the Theta Gen Pro V. I wouldn't buy a lesser Schiit design but am a potential customer of this one - if it's released before the end of the decade!
