for a high end system?
You have a very great system that you're going to stick a mid-level DAC into? I guess it's OK if you expect it to sound way below the quality of your system.
In no world is a Schiit or Mytek = to a Lindeman or Meitner.

The folks behind Schiit Audio aren't newbies. Just reflect on the reviews Theta used to get. Knowing that and a bit about modern DAC design imperatives might lead you to consider that digital technology today is advancing in several directions at once, and rapidly.
For sure, the lower end models from Schiit are more basic/good-value, but forthcoming models, such as the Yggdrasil, are ones to watch, I predict.

why these advances might mitigate or eliminate the need for great power supplies, high quality wire, less variance in the spec of resistors, caps, DAC chips etc? Quality, (and expensive), quantity, of DAC chips, RFI mitigation, inert cases? Quality connectors? and more?

The more wide-spread use of FGPAs and DSP chips are but two. Power supplies, well specified, have been at the forefront of good design forever. SPDIF-free protocols are another. I guess I am less inclined to adhere to the audio hierarchies of 'old', especially in the digital realm!Have a look at (admittedly) limited detail around the forthcoming Yggdrasil. Many of the features appear to be updates of the Theta Gen Pro V. I wouldn't buy a lesser Schiit design but am a potential customer of this one - if it's released before the end of the decade!

A DAC is the one component where I've found almost no correlation between price and performance.... Or even the name behind it.
Heck, look at my digital source... A modified Philips CDC-935 changer.... A DAC section I'd put up against anything short of a Wadia 9......... The catch is you need to gut the stock analog output stage and put something good in its place.
The key is satisfying sound, regardless of how you get there.
I am Lampizating my Kinergetics DAC with the awesome UltraAnalog modules. It sounded darn good already with the discrete transistor output but that died so I said let's lampizate! Will let you know how that went in due time.
I know and in the end I will most probably buy a high end DAC like the PS audio DS. But I have a few thousands cd's to copy that will take me a long time, maybe a year and in the meantime I could now and then play
some of them with the mid price DAC, which later i could use if I wished in my office system or if I decide not to keep it it would not be a big train smash money wise.
I managed to get a PS audio "new wave" for 600$ which seems a good price,
I did not listen to it yet as I still need cabling and a few other things
I can play my cd's and sacd's on my Sony.
It will be interesting to hear the difference on RBCD's
Good luck, - please let us know what you get and how it works out.

Ok it was set up about 40 hours ago and been running non stop,
my impressions are as follows.
On the plus side it is a well made unit and looks nice, the bottom end (bass) is excellent but at this stage it is not as musical or should I say ear friendly as the Sony, but it obviously needs to run in for a week or so before passing judgement.
On some cd’s it sound excellent, on other a little grey!!?? and not as natural.
I also need to experiment with cables. Comparing the same track with my cd player is not instantaneous, as the output is higher +_ 8 db's thus I need to turn down the volume to match the level of the Sony.
So some + and _ but it will be interesting to see how it comes out.
Not sure how long it needs to run in before passing judgement.

Just a question.....can the Nu wave DAC do DSD 64 on the fly?
The question is, is DSD noticeably better than hi-res PCM? The audiophile marketing machine will have you believe so.
No, the NuWave DAC does not do DSD at all.
Naw...I'd have to ask what's the marketing machine to do with what I'm hearing? I've listened to the PSAudio Direct Steam in a shoot out with a Lampizator Level 5, then listen to the Lampizator Level 7 all 3 in DSD...and then the Entry level Lampizator Amber DAC in HI-REZ....And finally the iFI IDSD DAC...and to my ears DSD 64 as well as 128 bettered the Hi REZ....at least to my ears.
Are you convinced that quality sound is proportional to price?
I had a $5000 DAC but my $1000 DAC sounds better to me. Go figure.

Well, your audiophile credentials are now just tettering on the precipice with that shocking admission. Next thing I suppose is that you will suggest that specifications and measurements can actually have some value...
It's a slippery slope Abe and the drooling jaws of the Mid-Fi (Measurements May Matter) monster await the unrepentant.
For maximum repentance dig out your old Yogi Yorgesson 78 of 'I Yust go Nuts at Christmas' and play it on your hand-cranked, spring-driven, cactus-needled player before midnight tomorrow.
Hope you make in time...
Merry Christmas!

Don't you just hate it when cheaper equipment sounds better than the expensive stuff? ;-)
